According to the Hindu Panchang, the festival of Chhath Puja is celebrated on the sixth day (Shashti) of the Shukla paksha in the month of Kartik. This year, the festival falls on October 30th, 2022.

The fast of Chhath Puja 2022 will begin on October 28th, 2022, and will be celebrated till October 31st. There will be four yogas in these four days- Shobhana, Atiganda, Sukarma, and Dhriti. 

October 28th, 2022: Shobhana Yoga – Till 1:28 pm

October 29th, 2022: Atiganda Yoga – Till 10:22 pm

October 30th, 2022: Sukarma Yoga – Till 7:15 pm

October 31st, 2022: Dhriti Yoga – Till 4:11 pm

  • Shobhana Yoga is said to be a very auspicious period. Worshiping and praying during this auspicious yoga with proper vidhi will increase the person’s attractiveness and they live a happy married life.
  • Avoid commencing any good and fortunate task during the Atiganda Yoga, as it is regarded as an inauspicious yoga. Additionally, do not pray during this yoga.

How to celebrate the festival of Chhath Puja 2022

The Chhath festivities go on for four days, and hence, are also called ‘Chaar Divasiya Utsav.’ It starts on the third day after Bhaiya Dooj, i.e., on the fourth day (Chaturthi tithi) of the Kartik Shukla paksha, and ends on the seventh day (Saptami tithi) of the Kartik Shukla paksha. 

The first day begins with ‘Nahaye-Khaye.’ Devotees start their days by bathing and cleaning their homes, and consume only sattvic (sattvic) food. This year, with the Nahaye-Khaye, the Chhath Puja festivities will begin on October 28th, 2022.

The second day of Chhath Puja is for ‘Kharna,’ which is the second most important day of the festivities. This day falls on the fifth day (Panchami tithi) of the Kartik Shukla paksha and is the beginning of the nirjala fast. This means the person observing the fast does not consume food or water. People make prasad for Goddess Chhathi in the evening of this day.

On the third day of Chhath Puja, the devotees offer Arghya to Surya dev in the evening. They decorate a basket made of bamboo with fruits, thekua, rice laddu, etc., and the person observing the nirjala fast offers arghya of milk and water to Surya dev with their family in the evening. After offering the arghya, the person observing the fast worships Goddess Chhathi with the decorated soop (सूप). The devotees worship Surya dev while singing songs of Goddess Chhathi and listening to the vrat katha.

The fourth and the last day of Chhath Puja is observed on the seventh day (Saptami tithi) of the Kartik Shukla paksha. On the final day of Chhath, devotees offer Surya dev arghya in the morning near a river shore (ghaat). Devotees break their fast on this day with the wish of keeping their families safe and happy.

Rituals & rules of Chhath Puja

  • There is a special importance in offering arghya to Surya dev in Chhath Puja. The puja is considered incomplete without the arghya.
  • The person observing the Chhath Puja Vrat should wear clean clothes every day. 
  • According to the rules of this fast, the family and the person observing the fast should consume only sattvic food.
  • Devotees must use only bamboo baskets or soop for the Puja.
  • The person observing the fast should not sleep on a bed or chaarpayi.
  • Using steel or plastic utensils while offering arghya to Surya dev must be avoided.
  • As per astrology, by throwing a copper coin into the running water during Chhath Puja, there are chances of reducing Surya Dosh in your horoscope (Kundali).
