Kharna & Its Signifcance

Let’s begin with the meaning of Kharna. The second day of the Chhath festival is referred to as Kharna, meaning purification. As we have already explained the importance of the first day of this festival which marks the beginning of the practice called Nahaye Khaye. On this very day, the observer of this fast eats food only once in a day and then, enters the state of purification. Kharna marks the beginning of 36 hours long Nirjala fast. It means that the observer of the fast can neither consume water nor eat anything and that is the very reason, the fast on this very day is considered to be the hardest.

On this very day, the observer of this fast worships Kul Devta, Lord Sun along with Chhathi Maiya and prepares Kheer with jaggery and offers it as Bhog.  

Kharna Prasad includes rice, chapatis with ghee on it, sugarcane juice, Rasiya made of jaggery, etc. After this, these items are first offered to Lord Sun and then, consumed as Prasad.

On the second day of Chhath Puja, i.e. the day of Kharna, the idol of Lord Sun is put on a plank during the dusk and after this, the tradition of worshipping him is being followed. After Kharna, the observer of the fast remains in Sadhna for 2 days. During this time, they have to follow the practice as Brahmacharya. Do keep in mind to sleep on the floor as sleeping on a bed is not permissible.

Rules

  • The fast commences after taking Prasad on the day of Kharna and completes after 36 hours by offering Arghya to the rising Sun and thus, this ends the Chhath Puja. The observer of this fast has to take a bath in the evening on the day of Kharna and Prasad is prepared with due rituals. The Prasad on this very day also includes radish and banana and should be prepared on a clay stove. Further, women observing fast take Prasad after worshipping Lord Sun.  

Rules for Attaining Peace, Prosperity & Good Health during Chhath Puja

  • If possible, help in making a Ghat. By doing so, a person is blessed with the fulfillment of all his wishes.
  • Donate the needy person to your maximum capacity. Apart from this, if you know a person who is poor enough and can’t perform Puja then help him to the maximum. This is considered to be very auspicious and fruitful. 
  • The Prasad of Chhath Puja is prepared in maximum quantity and is distributed among people. It is mentioned in the scriptures that the distribution of Prasad to a large number of people is considered to be very beneficial. 
  • Cleanliness must be maintained during Chhath Puja not only at home but also at the place where worship is to be performed. After worship, the place must be cleaned whether it is a riverbank, pond, or any other place.
  • In some places, the tradition of offering milk to the Sun as Arghya is followed. By doing so, one is blessed with bliss and happiness.  
  • If possible, make arrangements for a bonfire along the riverbank, pond, or at any other place. Since winters commence at slow pace during this time and in such a situation, bonfire reduces the effect of cold water. So, arranging fire makes this action more fruitful.

The observer of this fast is blessed with a good job, immense wealth, growth in business, good health, children, etc. However, if you are unable to perform this worship or observe fast, you need not lose heart. There are some simple remedial measures through which one can attain the blessings of Chhathi Maiya. 

  • Offer Arghya to Lord Sun everyday and recite Aditya Hridaya Stotra daily. 
  • Offer water to the Sun using copper pot and while offering, add red flowers and Akshat in water.
