The fast of Govind Dwadashi is observed on the second day of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in Magha month. Govind Dwadashi is also known as Bhishma Dwadashi or Til Dwadashi at certain places. This year, it is going to be celebrated on February 24, Wednesday.

Significance of Bhishma Dwadashi/Govind Dwadashi

It is believed that Lord Vishnu narrated everything to Bhishma about Govind Dwadashi and after this, the latter was the first person who observed it with due rituals and therefore, this fast was named as Bhishma Dwadashi. It is said that one who gives donation, performs Havan and Yagya with pious intention, gets the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Also, this fast is helpful in getting rid of all diseases.

Mantras to Get Rid of All Diseases

Recite any of the following Mantras on the day of Govind Dwadashi:

 ओम नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय नमः /  oma namo bhagavate vāsudevāya namaḥ

ओम नमो नारायणाय नम: / oma namo nārāyaṇāya nama: 

ओम श्री कृष्णाय नम: / oma śrī kṛṣṇāya nama: 

Recite any of the above-cited Mantras 108 times on the day of Govind Dwadashi to get rid of all diseases. Also, it makes a person get free from all past and present sins of life and he/she becomes a part of heaven.

Rituals of Govind Dwadashi Vrat

  • Take an oath to fast after taking a bath in the morning on this very day.
  • After this, venerate Lord Lakshminarayana.
  • Things such as Moli, Roli, rice, Panchamrit, Tulsi, sesame etc. should be included in the worship.
  • Offer sesame and Pachamrit as Bhog to the lord.
  • Further, recite the legend/Katha.
  • In the evening, serve the needy with food and give donations as per your financial capacity and then, take food. 
  • Perform devotional worship (Kirtan) of Lord Hari on the night of this very day.

Rituals of Govind Dwadashi Vrat

The fast of Govind Dwadashi is observed on the second day of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in Magha month. In this fast, mainly worship, good behaviour, pious thoughts, and purity are emphasised. If this Dwadashi Tithi remains in the Pradosh Kaal for 2 days then, it can also be celebrated on the second day of the same Kaal. This fast is considered to be fruitful for prosperity and comforts. Along with this, a person gets rid of all diseases and problems in life and is blessed with a boon of good health and long life. Govind Ekadashi is also known by the name of Bhishma Dwadashi. Pitru Tarpan is also performed on this very day. Besides this, the rules of this very day are equivalent to that of Ekadashi fasts.     

Legend of Govind Dwadashi Vrat

It is believed that one is blessed with peace and prosperity by hearing the legend of this fast. Once, this fast was observed by a girl belonging to the Yadav clan. It is believed that she became a part of Baikunth Dham after observing it. After this, Lord Krishna narrated everything to Bhishma Pitamah about the fruits that were obtained by the Yadav girl.
