Story Behind Surya Saptami/Bhanu Saptami Vrat

According to the mythological legend, once Yudhishthira asked Shri Krishna, ’What is the name of that one fast which can be observed by a woman to attain salvation in Kali Yuga? In response to this question, Lord Krishna told him the story of a woman named Indumati. You also hear that story,

“Once Indumati went to Sage Vasistha and said, I have never carried out or performed any religious activity. How will I be able to attain salvation? Hearing her, Rishi Vashistha told her that there is no better fast to observe than that of Surya Saptami/Bhanu Saptami for those who want to attain salvation. Further, Sage Vashistha also advised Indumati to observe this fast with great devotion. Having obeyed the Sage, Indumati duly fasted on the day of Bhanu Saptami, following which she gained a place in heaven after her death.”
