Seeing this, Maharishi Durvasa became displeased and considered it disrespectful toward Lord Shiva. He then cursed Lord Vishnu, saying that Goddess Lakshmi would leave him, he would have to leave Kshirsagar, and even Sheshnag would not be able to protect him. 

Lord Vishnu respectfully asked Maharishi Durvasa for a way to be freed from the curse. The sage advised him to observe the Uma-Maheshwar Vrat with complete devotion. Lord Vishnu followed his advice and observed the Vrat with faith. According to the legend, he was freed from the curse, Goddess Lakshmi returned to him, and he regained what he had lost.
