Bargad tree is also known as Vat Vriksha. In one of the Shlokas of Vamana Purana, we have the reference of the birth of this tree.  

यक्षाणामधिस्यापि मणिभद्रस्य नारद, वटवृक्ष: समभव तस्मिस्तस्य रति: सदा॥

इस श्लोक के मुताबिक यक्षों के राजा मणिभद्र से वट वृक्ष की उत्पत्ति हुई। /

yakṣāṇāmadhisyāpi maṇibhadrasya nārada, vaṭavṛkṣa: samabhava tasmistasya rati: sadā॥

isa śloka ke mutābika yakṣoṃ ke rājā maṇibhadra se vaṭa vṛkṣa kī utpatti huī।

At the time of the creation of the universe, it is believed that the Lotus flower emerged from the navel of Lord Vishnu. Likewise, other deities also created plants and trees. Out of these deities, Manibhadra created this Vat Vriksha, known as Bargad tree. Also, it is known by other names such as ‘Yakshavaas’, ‘Yakshataru’, ‘Yakshavaruka’.

Peepal, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, while Bargad, is of Lord Shiva

Bargad tree has got the status of Lord Shiva in Sanatan Dharma. At the same time, it is also believed that the energy of Tridev resides in the tree. In addition to this, it is believed that Brahma, the creator, rests in its roots; Vishnu, the protector, in the middle of it; Shiva, the destroyer, at the top of it. Another belief is that Lord Krishna appeared before Markandeya on the Akshaya Vat leaves at the time of disaster.    

We find the reference of the Bargad tree in both the revered scriptures such as Ramayana and Mahabharata. Besides this, there is also a mention of the Bargad tree in other scriptures as Yajurveda, Atharvaveda, Satapatha Brahmana, Aitareya Brahmana, Maha Upanishad, Subhashitavali, Manusmriti.  

Cutting Bargad tree is considered equal to murdering one’s son. The worship of this tree helps in attaining peace, prosperity, and tranquility. Importance of Bargad In Ayurveda

Bargad tree is not only worshipped but every part of it is significant in Ayurvedic medicines. Its bark, leaves, roots, and trunk, etc. play a pivotal role in Ayurveda. It cures diseases related to nose, ears, hair, etc. Along with it, the blood vomiting is also treated with the medicine prepared by Bargad tree.        

It is also important for the purification of environment. It is said that it emits oxygen in the atmosphere for 20 hours in a day. Several birds weave their nests on this tree because of its denseness.
