Ashadha Amavasya Mythology

According to mythology, a king named Kuber lived in the city of Alkapuri in Swarga Dham. He was a big Shiva devotee who worshipped Lord Shiva with all rites on a daily basis. Every day, a gardener named Hem would bring flowers to the king’s house to worship Shiva. Hem Mali’s wife, Vishalakshi, was quite beautiful.

When the gardener went to Mansarovar to collect flowers, he started joking with his wife. The king began to await the flower’s offering in reverence. When it was too late and the king’s patience had run out, he sent his servants to find the gardener. The soldiers observed the gardener and informed the king that the gardener was a very immoral person.

He’s joking with his wife. Hearing this, the king became angry. The king commanded the soldiers to summon the gardener. When the gardener reached the king, he began to tremble. King Kuber became enraged and cursed the gardener, saying, “You will endure the separation from your wife, and after death you will become a leper.” Due to King Kuber’s curse, the gardener fell from heaven to earth. And as soon as he arrived on earth, he developed leprosy on his body. Hem Mali’s wife disappeared at that very moment. Following his arrival on Earth, the gardener faced numerous challenges. He continued traveling through the wilderness without food or water. Hem Mali could not sleep at night, but through the impact of worshiping Lord Shiva, he learned about his former birth’s sins.

One day, while wandering around, the gardener Markandeya came across the sage’s ashram and fell at his feet. Seeing this, the sage inquired as to what sin he had committed. As a result, he found himself in this situation. Hem Mali explained the entire issue to the sage. According to the sage, he must fast in order to achieve salvation. The sage stated that if he fasts on Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha in Ashadh month with complete rites, all of his sins will be cleansed. The gardener was delighted to hear this. He bowed before the sage. Following that, Hem Mali observed the fast according to the rituals. Following that, the gardener got rid of all his wrongdoings.
