Amalaki Ekadashi: Legend

In ancient times, people belonging to Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra clans lived happily in a city named Vaidish and nobody was a sinner, irreligious and atheist. Rituals as per Vedic tradition used to be carried out everywhere. The Chandravanshi kings  would rule the city and from this dynasty, there was a king named Chaitratha and he was religious and benevolent. Also, he was very energetic, strong, rich and fortunate. These kings would always make their people happy and thus, there was positivity all around and poverty was nowhere. All the people of this city were the devotees of Lord Vishnu.

Once upon a time, the day of Amalaki Ekadashi fell on Dwadashi Tithi of Phalgun month in Shukla Paksha and in this pretext, all the children, youngsters, aged people, women and king observed this fast with due rituals. The king went for a dip in the river in the morning and reached the temple of Lord Vishnu on the bank of that river. After this, the king along with his subjects established the idol of Lord Vishnu and worshipped Parshuram, Amla tree along with Lord Vishnu with due rituals and requested for the acceptance of meditation. Further, the king along with his subjects heard the legend of Lord Vishnu and Lord Parshuram, indulged in singing and praising god throughout the night.

On the very evening, a hunter appeared on the scene who used to live on hunting animals, saw many people in the decorated temple with people worshipping god, he realised that the sight was the fruit of his previous life’s good deeds. When he went in, he had a sight of the Kalash on which, Lord Damodara was established and heard the legend of Shri Hari. Although he was hungry and thirsty, he performed Jagran along with other devotees. In the morning, the king along with his subjects returned to the town and the hunter also went to his home and enjoyed his meals.

It is said that the hunter died after some time. However, observing the Ekadashi fast and performing Jagran unknowingly, he was blessed to be born to a rich king named Vidhurath. In this life, he was shining like the Sun, tolerant like earth, religious, truthful etc. and then became the supreme devotee of Lord Vishnu. Also, he became a big donor and was known as Vasurath. Once, he went to a forest and while returning, he lost his way. As he could not be unable to find his way, he felt hungry and thirsty and thus, he fell asleep in the forest.

At this time, some people gathered around the king and tried to kill him. They felt that the king was their enemy, so to kill him was the best alternative and also, felt that the king was the killer of their parents and children. In this regard, many arrows aimed at the king were off target and on seeing this, they were terrified. Then, they saw that a beautiful girl ladened with so many ornaments appeared from the king and they ran here and there. Then, the girl slew them with Chakra.

When the king came out from his slumber, he was astonished to see so many killings. Then, he began to think as to who had protected him from these young enemies. Then, he heard the voice from within that who else could save him except Lord Keshav. In this way, he had been protected by Lord Hari and on returning to his kingdom, he ruled with kindness and benevolence.
