Amalaki Ekadashi: Ancient Lore

According to ancient legends, Lord Brahma was born from the navel of Lord Vishnu, and he enunciated his desire to know himself. In order to get the answers to all his questions, he started ardently worshiping Lord Vishnu. After worshiping for many years, Lord Vishnu got elated by Lord Brahma’s devotion and then Lord Vishnu appeared in front of Lord Brahma. After so many years of hard penance, when he saw Lord Vishnu in front of him, he became emotional and started crying. According to beliefs, the Amla tree originated from the tears that were shed by Lord Brahma. After seeing this, Lord Vishnu claimed that the Amla tree (Gooseberry) is born from your tears, so this tree and its fruit will always be dear to me. He said this is a divine tree in which all the Gods reside. Lord Vishnu added, “From now on, whoever worships me while seated beneath the Amla tree on the auspicious day of Amalaki Ekadashi while observing the fast shall attain emancipation.”
