The Ahoi Ashtami fasting is kept by mothers for the long life of their children. The story of Ahoi Ashtami is as follows – Once upon a time, there used to be a moneylender living with his seven sons in a village. Their house had to be painted on the occasion of Diwali, so the moneylender’s wife went to the mine to get mud. The moneylender’s wife was using a spade for digging the soil and in the process a baby porcupine was injured & then died at the spot. After watching all of it, the wife of the moneylender became very sad and returned home with remorse.
After some time since the incident, all the seven sons of the moneylender died. Troubled with grief over the incident, the moneylender’s wife shared the incident with an elderly woman in her neighborhood about the incident of the porcupine’s death with her spade. The old woman after listening to the moneylender’s wife said that by telling the relevant story she has got rid of half of their sins.
