Who Is Lord Trivikrama?

As we told earlier that on Apara Ekadashi 2026, the Trivikrama form of Lord Vishnu is worshipped. Now we are going to tell you further about the story related to Lord Trivikrama. You must have heard the mythological story of Vamana and King Mahabali. This has been explained in detail in the Bhagavata Purana and Padma Purana. King Mahabali was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and was also a noble king. He possessed the power to defeat even King Indra. Frightened, the gods sought help from Lord Vishnu.

Aditi, the mother of Lord Indra, was instructed by her husband Kashyapa to perform a penance called Pravritti to protect Indra. On her devotion and the request of the gods, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana in the house of Aditi. When King Bali was performing a yajna in his kingdom, Vamana came to him and asked him for wealth as big as three steps. King Bali knew that Lord Vishnu himself was testing him. Vamana was a dwarf man but as soon as the king agreed to give him three steps of land, Vamana’s size started increasing.

He covered the earth with his first step and the sky with his second. After this, Vamana asked the king where he should place his third step. The king asked him to place the third step on his head. Vamana placed his foot on the king’s head and drowned him in the netherworld. Bhavan Vishnu handed over the underworld to King Bali and was extremely pleased with the king’s devotion. The gigantic form of Lord Vishnu as Vamana came to be known as Trivikrama.

In return for his sacrifice, King Bali asked Lord Trivikrama for a boon that he could return to earth once every year and check on the well-being of his subjects. King Bali was granted this boon by Lord Trivikrama and his return is celebrated as the festival of Onam in the state of Kerala. According to the Malayalam calendar, this incident happened in the Thiruvonam Nakshatra in the month of Chingam.
