Sharad Purnima 2025: Katha

According to mythology, in ancient times there lived a very wealthy merchant in a city. He had no shortage of money, property, or luxuries, yet he and his wife were always unhappy because they had no children. They worshipped many deities and performed several yajnas and rituals, but the blessing of a child did not come. After a long time, their wish was fulfilled, and they were blessed with a daughter. The girl was very beautiful but extremely lazy by nature. As she grew older, her laziness only increased.

She neither woke up on time nor did she participate in prayers or help with household work. These habits constantly troubled the family. When she reached marriageable age, her parents got her married to a good and worthy young man. However, when she went to her in-laws’ house, her lazy behavior upset everyone there as well. She had no interest in any work and always procrastinated. Gradually, this habit became so severe that even her husband started distancing himself from her, and her family members stopped respecting her.

One day, her mother-in-law told her, “Today is Sharad Purnima, a day of fasting and jagrata. All women observe this vrat and worship Goddess Lakshmi so that happiness and prosperity remain in the household. You too should observe this vrat today and pray to Goddess Lakshmi to remove your laziness.”

The girl thought to herself that perhaps this could end the troubles of her life. She observed the fast with complete devotion, stayed awake the entire night, and worshipped Goddess Lakshmi sincerely. It is said that Goddess Lakshmi herself appeared in the girl’s home that night and said, “My daughter, because of your laziness, your life has become sorrowful. But today, through your fast and sincere devotion, I am pleased. From now on, laziness will leave your life, and you will be blessed with happiness, prosperity, and respect.”

From that day, the girl gradually changed. She began taking in household duties, started performing prayers, and learned the value of time. Happiness returned to her life, and her in-laws also began to respect her. This is why it is believed that by observing the Sharad Purnima fast and worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, laziness, poverty, and sorrow are removed, and one attains happiness, wealth, and prosperity.
