Significance Of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is not just a festival, it is a celebration of faith, devotion, and belief. This day marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, who is revered as the Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles), Siddhidata (giver of success), and the god of wisdom and intellect. Celebrated on the Chaturthi tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, this festival is observed with immense enthusiasm across India, especially in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, North India, and countries around the world!

On this day, devotees bring Ganpati Bappa home, perform special rituals and offer modaks, durva grass, and laddoos as prasad. It is believed that Lord Ganesha descends to earth on this very day, to take away the sorrows of his devotees and bless them with peace, happiness, and success. The most important message of Ganesh Chaturthi is that every new beginning should commence with Lord Ganesha’s blessings. He not only removes hurdles but also grants wisdom, discernment, and humility, qualities essential for leading life in the right direction.

In today’s fast-paced life, this festival reminds us to return to mindfulness, devotion, and simplicity. When families come together to serve and worship Bappa, the atmosphere at home becomes both positive and spiritually uplifting.

Mythological Story Of Ganesh Chaturthi

According to Hindu Mythology, long ago, Goddess Parvati created a boy from the sandalwood paste and dirt from her body while she was preparing for a bath. She breathed life into the figure, and the boy came to life, beautiful, strong, and obedient. Parvati instructed him not to let anyone enter while she was bathing, no matter who it was. At that very moment, Lord Shiva arrived and tried to enter, but the boy stopped him at the door. Enraged by the boy’s refusal and unaware of his identity, Lord Shiva warned him, but the boy stood firm, obeying his mother’s command. In a fit of rage, Lord Shiva severed the boy’s head with his trident.

When Goddess Parvati came out and saw what had happened, she was devastated and furious. In her grief, she threatened to destroy the entire universe. All the gods panicked and pleaded with Lord Shiva to rectify the situation. To pacify Parvati’s anger, Lord Shiva instructed the Gods to bring the head of the first living being they found lying with its head facing North. They found a baby elephant asleep in that position and brought back its head. Lord Shiva placed the elephant’s head on the boy’s body and revived him.

To please Goddess Parvati, Shiva names the boy Ganesha and blessed him with the boon that he would always be worshipped first, before any other God. From that day on, Lord Ganesha became the Pratham Pujya, the first deity to be worshipped in all rituals and ceremonies.
