The 1st Solar Eclipse in April, 2023 was a hybrid Solar Eclipse and the 2nd one, which is set to occur on Saturday, October 14, 2023 will be an Annular Solar Eclipse. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the Sun for a viewer positioned on Earth. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s diameter is smaller than the Sun’s, blocking most of the Sun’s light and causing the Sun to look like an annulus or a ring. Solar Eclipse 2023: Sutak Period
Please note that the above mentioned time of the solar eclipse is given according to the Indian Standard Time. The 2nd solar eclipse of the year 2023 will be an annular eclipse but will not be visible in India. The Sutak period is only observed in the places where the eclipse is being seen or is visible, but since this 2nd and the last solar eclipse will not be visible in India, its Sutak period will not be observed and become redundant. So, the people of India can follow their routine activities normally, and don’t need to follow or observe any special rules and regulations. What Is Sutak?
Sutak is referred to as a time period before the solar or the lunar eclipse when the Earth’s atmosphere is considered impure or contaminated by harmful energies, hence performing certain activities during the Sutak kaal is prohibited. Sutak kaal is taken very seriously in the Hindu religion and performing pious rituals such as praying to god or other religious activities are strictly prohibited. The Sutak period is calculated keeping the praharas in mind.
The traditional system of praharas is the same as the system of muhurtas which is based on precise astronomical calculations. According to this system the day is divided into eight praharas (of three hours each) or thirty muhurtas (of 48 minutes each) commencing at Sunrise. The point to note here is that the Sutak period for Solar Eclipse is calculated taking 4 prahars into consideration. Therefore the Sutak period for Solar Eclipse starts 12 hours before the actual eclipse starts. Sutak is however observed only when the eclipse is visible at a said place. Some of the prohibited activities during Sutak kaal are oil massage, eating any type of solid or liquid food, engaging in sexual acts, starting a new venture during that period, performing religious activities, or touching the idols of the gods and goddesses is prohibited. - If you are afflicted by a serious disease and after doing all the remedies you still can’t find any relief then during this period of solar eclipse you should recite this special Shiv Mantra: oṃ namaḥ śivāya mṛtyuṃjaya mahādevāya namostute।
- If you’re facing serious challenges or physical illness during the period of solar eclipse you should donate black sesame seeds after taking it around your head seven times and donating it to the poor.
