Lord Krishna explained the significance of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi to Dharmaraj Yudhishthira. According to mythology, Mahishmati city existed during the Dwapar era, and its monarch was Mahijit. The king was heartbroken because he had no a son. He even disliked his own Rajpat. The monarch thought that a person who does not have a son had no happiness in this world or the next. He tried everything to have a son but was unsuccessful.
When that king grew older, he convened a meeting and invited people of his reign to attend. He expressed his regret at not having a son. He never harmed others and treated his people as if they were his own kid. Despite this, he never had a son. Why is this the case? To discover an answer to the king’s question, all the ministers and subjects went to the woodland sages. At one point, he came across Lomash Muni. When they all bowed down to Lomash Muni, Muni inquired as to why they had come. Then they all recounted the reason for the king’s grief.
He stated that their king is depressed since he is sonless, despite the fact that he cares for his people like a son. Then Lomash Rishi discovered King Mahijit’s prior birth with his Tapobal. He revealed that this king had previously been a poor Vaishya. For money, the king committed numerous crimes. On Jyeshtha Shukla Dwadashi, the king went to draw water from a reservoir and was starving for two days. A cow was also drinking water nearby.
This king then chased the cow away and began drinking water himself, and as a result, the king suffered the anguish of being sonless in this life. They all requested Lomash Rishi for a way to get rid of this wrongdoing. Then he told the king that if he observes fast on Shravan Shukla Ekadashi, he would be able to cleanse himself of all sins and also have a son.

Putrada Ekadashi occurs in the month of Sawan. Lord Shiva and Shri Hari Vishnu should be anointed with milk on this day in such a case.
