Significance Of Rang Panchami 2026
From a religious perspective, the festival of Rang Panchami holds special importance for Hindus. In the land of Lord Krishna, Braj, the five-day-long Holi celebrations come to an end with Rang Panchami. According to mythological beliefs, on the occasion of Rang Panchami, all gods and goddesses descend to Earth to play Holi with their devotees. This is why the festival is also known as Dev Panchami.
If we look at the meaning of Rang Panchami, the word “Rang” refers to colors, while “Panchami” signifies the fifth lunar day. Thus, the literal meaning of Rang Panchami is that it represents the fifth day of the festival of colors.
It is believed that throwing colors made from various flowers, along with turmeric and sandalwood, into the sky reduces the influence of rajasic and tamasic energies, thereby creating sattvic feelings in the mind. Doing so is also said to please all the gods and goddesses. You may be surprised to know that just as Kartik Purnima is considered the Diwali of the gods in Hinduism, similarly, Rang Panchami is regarded as the Holi of the gods.

Mythological Stories Associated With Rang Panchami
According to religious scriptures, one mythological story associated with Rang Panchami is related to devotees Prahlad and Holika. As per the legend, in ancient times, there was a demon king named Hiranyakashipu, who declared himself to be God. He ordered everyone to worship him and give him the status of the supreme deity. Out of fear, people began to follow his command. However, Hiranyakashipu’s son Prahlad was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu and refused to accept his father as God. Enraged by this, Hiranyakashipu tried several times to kill Prahlad, but each time Prahlad survived simply by chanting the name of Lord Vishnu.
Seeing this, Hiranyakashipu summoned his sister Holika, a demoness who had received a boon that fire could not burn her. One day, with the intention of harming Prahlad, Holika sat in a blazing fire with Prahlad on her lap. Throughout the ordeal, Prahlad continued chanting the name of Lord Vishnu. As a result, Holika was burned to ashes in the fire, while Prahlad emerged completely unharmed.
Another legend of Rang Panchami is associated with Lord Krishna. During his childhood, Lord Krishna killed the demoness Putana, who had been sent by his maternal uncle Kansa. Kansa, the evil king of Mathura, knew that the eighth child of his sister Devaki would be the cause of his death. In an attempt to kill Lord Krishna, Kansa sent the demoness Putana to Gokul. Putana came with poison smeared on her breasts and tried to poison Krishna while feeding him. However, in his infant form, Lord Krishna destroyed Putana.
When the people of Gokul discovered that Putana’s body was poisoned, they consigned her body to fire. It is believed that the festival of Rang Panchami has been celebrated since that day.
