This day holds a special place in Hinduism. The following are the religious rites and fasts observed on Phalguna Amavasya:

  • Early in the morning on Phalguna Amavasya, take a bath in a river. You can also just add a few drops of Ganges water in your bucket of water before bathing and bathe with that water. Offerings must be made to the Sun after bathing.
  • Taking bath in rivers has special significance on Phalguna Amavasya as it is believed Gods and Goddess appear in rivers on this Day, specially the Ganga.
  • Provide food for the cows like grains, and fodder and clothing, til, Amla (Gooseberry), blankets, bedding to the poor. 
  • If you belong to a financially stable background, you can donate a cow, some gold, or perhaps some land to the temple or the temple priest.
  • On Phalguna Amavasya, just like every other Amavasya, one should commemorate their ancestors.
