As per the Hindu Panchang, Parsva Ekadashi falls in the Shukla Paksha on the eleventh day of Bhadrapada month. Hence, the name ‘Ekadashi’ is given to this occasion. It is an auspicious festival for the Hindu community. According to the Gregorian calendar, the fast of Parsva Ekadashi is observed in the month of August or September.
Parsva Ekadashi is celebrated during “Dakshinayana Punyakalam”. It signifies the nighttime of the gods. This Hindu festival is considered very auspicious and fortunate when it occurs during the “Chaturmas” period. It is also known by the name “Parsva Parivartini Ekadashi”. This name was given because some people believe that it was during this time when Lord Vishnu shifted his position from the left side to the right side while taking a rest. This is why, at many places across the country Lord Vamana, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is worshipped on this day.

Parsva Ekadashi Vrat Katha
The Parsva Ekadashi Vrat Katha is associated with the demon Mahabali and Vamana Avatar of Lord Vishnu. According to the legend, the evil king, Bali, lived in the Tretayuga period. He followed dharma to rule his kingdom and was generous and charitable, yet, he was cruel in nature. He was mighty, and he conquered the world. One day, he decided to conduct Aswamedha Yaga and made necessary arrangements for it. Indra got worried about Bali’s decision of conquering heaven and replacing Indra with his throne. Therefore, he summoned Lord Vishnu for help.
This is when Lord Vishu incarnated as Vamana and defeated Bali.
Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of Vamana, his fifth main avatar, which was of a dwarf Brahmin boy. He went to Bali’s court and asked him if he could give him land that was thrice the size of Vamana’s foot. Bali agreed thinking that a little boy would have little feet. Bali’s guru Shuracharya understood that the boy was no ordinary person but Lord Vishnu. He warned Bali, but he refused to take his words back.
With the first step, Lord Vishnu covered the earth. With the second step, he covered the sky. It made Bali understand that the Brahmin boy was Lord Vishnu. He accepted his defeat and offered his head to Lord Vishnu. Vamana kept his last step on Bali’s head. He was sent to Patala Loka.
Therefore, on this day, devotees who observe the fast worship Vamana and read this Katha.
