Why Is This Ekadashi Known As Parivartini Ekadashi?
It is believed that Lord Vishnu sleeps during the months of Chaumas i.e. Ashadha, Shravan, Bhado and Ashwin, and therefore, every auspicious work should be avoided during these four months.
Lord Vishnu wakes up directly on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi, but there comes a time during Chaumas when Shri Hari Vishnu takes a turn side to side while sleeping. This time takes place on the Ekadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha during Bhado (Bhadrapada) month. Due to this act of tossing from side to side carried out by Lord Vishnu, this Ekadashi is called Parivartini Ekadashi. Those who observe this fast attain Heaven after death and all the sufferings fade away. Just by hearing reciting the legend of Parivartini Ekadashi, one attains fruits equal to thousands of Ashwamedha Yagya.

Legend of Parivartini Ekadashi
Those who observe fast on the day of Parivartini Ekadashi must read or listen to the legend of Vamana, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to mythological beliefs, Lord Krishna first told about the significance of Parvatini Ekadashi on the request of Arjuna during the period of Mahabharata. According to the legend, there was a demon named Bali in Treta Yuga, who had been a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Bali was charitable by nature, truthful and respected Brahmins. He always performed Yagya, penance etc.
King Bali became very powerful owing to his devotion. He had a feeling of enmity with Devraj Indra, due to which he captured Indraloka, took Devraj Indra’s place and started ruling on other Gods. Frightened and being fed up with Bali, Devraj Indra along with other Gods went to Lord Vishnu for help and prayed to him for protection. Then, Vishnu Ji took the incarnation of Vamana to protect Gods, visited Bali as a young Brahmin child and defeated him with an intellectual mindset.
Vamana, the incarnated form of Lord Vishnu, tested King Bali. Bali had already conquered all the three worlds but he had a quality of not letting any Brahmins go empty-handed and always donated whatever they demanded. Vamana Dev demanded three steps of land from Bali. The demon, Guru Shukracharya, who was present over there, understood the trick played by Vamana and alerted Bali. In spite of that, Bali accepted the demand of Vamana and promised to give him what he desired.

As soon as he got the promise, Lord Vishnu took his huge form and measured the earth with one foot and Heaven with the heel of the other foot and Brahmaloka with the paws. Now, King Bali was left with nothing for the third foot. Hence, fulfilling his promise, Bali surrendered his head unto the feet of Lord Vamana and Vamana put his third leg on Bali’s head. Lord Vamana was pleased with the fulfilment of the promise and made him the master of the underworld with the assurance that he would always remain by his side.
An idol of Lord Vishnu always remains with King Bali on the day of Parivartini Ekadashi while the second rests on the Sheshnag in the Ksheer Sagar. On this very day, Lord Vishnu takes a turn or tosses from side to side while sleeping.
