According to Shastras, by observing this fast one receives fruitful virtues which is equivalent to taking baths at all the holy places. Also, this Ekadashi gives auspicious outcomes which is equal to all 24 Ekadashis. This fast is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is believed that among all the Ekadashis that give individuals the blessings of Lord Vishnu, the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi is the toughest. Nirjala Ekadashi: Ancient Lore About The Fast
According to the ancient story, one day Bhim told Maharishi Ved Vyas that his mother and brothers suggest he observe the fast of Ekadashi but it is not possible for him. He said that “I can do worship and give donations but cannot stay hungry while observing the fast”. After listening to Bhim, Maharishi Ved Vyas told him that in order to attain heaven you must observe the fast of both the Ekadashis that come every month while not consuming any food. Then Bhim said that if there is a fast coming once a year, then he can observe that fast but every month he cannot do that as he gets hungry quickly.
Bhimsen then requested Maharishi Ved Vyas to tell him about that fast which could be kept once a year and by observing this fast one could attain heaven. Then Maharishi Ved Vyas told Bhim about the fast of Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi i.e. Nirjala Ekadashi, and said that you must observe this fast. Maharishi Ved Vyas while explaining about the fast said that consuming even water is prohibited in this fast. In this fast only bathing and Aachaman are allowed. On this day if one consumes food then their fast gets broken. Further, he said that if one doesn’t consume water from the start of the sunrise of Nirjala Ekadashi till the sunrise of Dwadashi Tithi, then one receives the fruits of all 24 Ekadashis.
Maharishi Ved Vyas then said that one should take a bath after sunrise on Dwadashi Tithi. After that, food should be offered to brahmins and donations must be given. After doing this, hungry people must be fed as well and one should also engage in their service. Then one should eat and break their fast according to the Vrat Parana Time. After listening to Maharishi Ved Vyas, Bhimsen with complete and proper worship methods and rituals, observed the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi. This is the reason why this Ekadashi is called Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandav Ekadashi.
