Chaitra Navratri is a Hindu festival that is celebrated in the spring season, usually in the months of March or April. It is a nine-day festival that is dedicated to the worship of the Goddess Durga and her various incarnations. During the nine days of Navratri, people observe fasts, perform rituals, and offer prayers to the goddess Durga. Each day is associated with a particular form of the goddess, and devotees offer special prayers and perform specific rituals to honor that particular form. On the first day of Navratri, people worship Shailaputri, the daughter of the Himalayas. “Shail” means the ‘mountains’ and “Putri” means ‘daughter.’ She is depicted as a serene and peaceful deity, who rides a bull and holds a trident and a lotus flower in her hands. People offer flowers, fruits, and sweets to the goddess and recite hymns and prayers in her honor. People also install urns, or the Kalash Sthapna, or Ghatasthapana, on the first day of Chaitra Navratri.

Goddess Shailputri was the wife of Lord Shiva and the daughter of Daksha in her former life, according to folklore. Daksha once hosted a Mahayagya to which he invited all the deities except Lord Shiva. Goddess Sati, the previous form of Goddess Shailputri, was also growing impatient to attend the Mahayagya. On this, Lord Shiva informed him that he had not been invited and that it would be inappropriate to show up somewhere uninvited. however, Goddess Sati began demanding beyond borders, Lord Shiva granted her permission to visit her home. She arrived at her house to find a sense of scorn for her husband, and Daksha also used disrespectful language toward her. Goddess Sati, unable to bear the dishonor of her husband and herself by her own father, jumped into the fire of the Yagya and burned herself to ashes. Lord Shiva was enraged at this, and he demolished the Yagya.

Years later, after several births, Lord Shiva’s Sati was born in the household of King Himavat of the Shailraj Mountains in the following life. As a result, she was given the name Shailputri. She is also known as Hemavati, and since she rides a bull, her other name is Vrisharudha.
