Importance of Masik Durga Ashtami
Every month, the fast of Durga Ashtami is observed on Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha. It is called Masik Durgashtami as it falls every month. The Ashtami that falls during Shardiya Navratri of Ashwin month is considered to be the most important one among all Durga Ashtami of the year and hence, called ‘Mahashtami’.

According to mythological beliefs, once Dambha, the King of Demons, was blessed with a son, who he named Mahishasura. Mahishasura always wished to be immortal since childhood and started performing austerity (Tapasya) dedicated to Brahma Ji to attain it. Brahma Ji got pleased with the hard austerities performed by Mahishasura and asked him what he desired. He expressed his desire for immortality from Brahma Ji. however, he asked him to ask for any other wish instead, after which Mahishasura revealed his wish and asked that besides a woman, nobody else could kill him.
Brahma Ji fulfilled his wish, after which he became arrogant and attacked Prithvi Loka with his army. Then, ruckus started taking place all across and after conquering Earth and Underworld, he attacked Indra Lok, and defeated Devaraj Indra and captured Heaven. Being fed up with the tyranny of Mahishasura, all gods and goddesses approached Tridev for help. After the advice of Vishnu Ji, all gods called Goddess Shakti for help. A very beautiful entity named Maa Adi-Shakti appeared from the Tej coming out of the Gods. further, all the gods were also amazed by the form and glory of Mother Adi-Shakti.
