This Tithi is considered to be highly auspicious in the domain of astrology. During Mahashivaratri, the Sun is already in Uttarayana and the season changes. In this pretext, as per astrology, the Moon enters its debilitated state on Chaturdashi Tithi. As we all know that Lord Shiva bears the Moon on his forehead and therefore, worshipping him leads to strengthen the position of the Moon in one’s life and their willpower becomes strong.

Legends Associated with Mahashivaratri

It is said that Maa Parvati was drowned in meditation to get Lord Shiva as her husband. As a result, Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati got married on Chaturdashi Tithi in Phalgun month during Krishna Paksha and therefore, the day of Mahashivaratri is considered to be important and pious.

In addition to this, there is a mention in Garuda Purana that once, Nishadraj went hunting with his dog but they could not find any prey despite putting in their best efforts. In this context, he got exhausted because of hunger and thirst and came to the banks of a pond and found a tree of Bilva and under it, Shivlinga was present. When Nishadraj started breaking Bilva Patra to give rest to his body, then some leaves fell on Shivling. After this, when he took water to clean his feet from the pond, some drops of it also fell on Shivling. Further, he bowed down to lift the bow, he unknowingly bowed in front of Shivalinga.

In this above-cited context, he performed all the rituals of worshipping Lord Shiva unknowingly on the day of Shivaratri. After his death, the messengers of death (Yamdoot) came to take him but he remained unaffected and unmoved due to the worship of Lord Shiva. In this regard, it is said one who worships unknowingly and gets so much reward then you can imagine how much blessings a person can get by worshipping Lord Shiva whole-heartedly.
