Legend/Katha of Karwa Chauth Vrat
There used to be a money lender in the ancient time. The lender had seven sons and a daughter. Once, all the seven daughters-in-law and his daughter observed the fast of Karwa Chauth. When the lender along with his sons came to eat food in the evening, they could not see their sister in hunger. They requested their sister to eat food again and again but she refused to eat anything before sighting and worshipping the Moon.
In this pretext, all the seven brothers came out from the city and lit a fire at a distant place. After returning home, they told their sister that the Moon had appeared and asked her to end her fast while sighting. The sister ended her fast considering the fire as Moon. After ending the fast in deceit, her husband fell ill and all the household money was spent on his illness.
After some time, the daughter came to know about the deceit of her brothers and realised her mistakes and started worshipping Lord Ganesha with due rituals. Then, she asked for forgiveness for the mistake committed unconsciously. Owing to this, her husband recovered and the money spent on his treatment came back.
