Mythological Story Related to Kamada Ekadashi 2026
According to the legend described in the sacred scriptures, in ancient times there was a king named Pundarika who ruled over the city of Bhogipur. His kingdom was inhabited by apsaras, kinnaras, and gandharvas, and his royal court was adorned by their presence. Every day, gandharvas and kinnaras would perform music in the king’s court.
In that city lived an exceptionally beautiful apsara named Lalita along with her husband Lalit. The two shared deep love and affection for each other and were always immersed in thoughts of one another. Once, while the gandharva Lalit was singing in King Pundarika’s court, he suddenly began thinking about his wife Lalita. Because of this distraction, he lost control over his voice while singing. A serpent named Karkotaka, who was present in the court, noticed this and informed King Pundarika about Lalit’s lapse. Hearing this, the king became furious and cursed Lalit to become a demon (rakshasa).
After receiving the curse, Lalit wandered for many years in a demonic form. His devoted wife Lalita continued to follow him wherever he went. However, she was deeply distressed to see her husband in such a miserable condition. Many years passed in this manner, and while wandering, Lalita eventually reached the Vindhya Mountains, where she met Sage Rishyamuk.
She humbly asked the sage for a remedy to free her husband from the curse. Moved by her devotion and sorrow, the sage advised her to observe the fast of Kamada Ekadashi. After receiving his blessings, Lalita returned to her place and observed the Kamada Ekadashi fast with full faith and devotion. Due to the spiritual merit and power of this Ekadashi fast, Lalit was freed from the curse, and both husband and wife regained their original gandharva forms.
