The Story Of Jaya Ekadashi 2026
According to a mythological legend, Indra ruled a magnificent kingdom in heaven. Along with the gods, many Gandharvas and Apsaras also resided there. Among them were a Gandharva named Pushpadant and an Apsara named Malyavan, who were deeply in love with each other. One day, a divine musical and dance performance was organized in heaven for the gods. Pushpadant and Malyavan were also given the opportunity to sing and dance in that assembly. However, they became so absorbed in their mutual love that their attention drifted away from the praise of the Lord.
This angered Indra greaty. Due to Indra’s curse, Pushpadant and Malyavan were forced to be born in the form of Pishachas. They began living in the harsh conditions of the Himalayan mountains. Their lives became extremely miserable, filled with hunger, thirst, fear, and suffering. One day, by coincidence, the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Magha, Jaya Ekadashi, arrived.
On that day, they did not receive any food, and unknowingly, they ended up observing the Ekadashi fast. They remained awake throughout the night and remembered Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu was greatly pleased with this unintentional fast. By His grace, both of them were freed from the Pishacha form and regained their divine forms, ultimately returning to the heavenly realm.
Lord Vishnu then told the gods that observing the fast of Jaya Ekadashi frees human beings from obstacles caused by evil spirits, fear, sins, and sorrows. This fast bestows victory, fame, and happiness along with prosperity. For this reason, it is called Jaya Ekadashi and is considered extremely meritorious and sacred.
