Significance of Cow Pujan

As per Hinduism, cow mother is considered above all pilgrimages. In addition to this, a cow attains the status of mother and she can’t be compared with any deities or pilgrimage.

In this pretext, it is believed that only Darshan of a cow mother can give such virtues which are not attained even through fruitful Yagyas, donations and pious deeds. There is a belief among people that if a person wishes to please all the deities and his/her ancestors, there can not be any ritual greater than cow devotion or cow service.

It is believed that food offered to cows, reaches directly to the deities. Women observe the fast of Bach Baras or Govatsa Dwadashi wholeheartedly and sincerely for the well being, long life of their sons, happiness of their family and also, to be blessed with a son. Legend Concerning Govatsa Dwadashi

There used to be a kingdom named Suvarnapura in ancient times. Devdani was the king of this kingdom. He would have a cow, a calf and a buffalo. He had two queens. One queen was named Sita while the other was Geeta. Where on one hand, Sita liked buffalo very much, while on the other, Geeta loved cow and calf.

Once, a buffalo tells her queen Sita that Gita does not love her because of a cow and her calf. Sita heard buffalo and assured her of making everything right. Then, Sita cut the cow’s calf and buried it in a heap of wheat. This thing was not known to anyone for a long time, but as soon as the king sat down to eat food, the rain of meat began.

The pieces of the cow’s body and blood appeared everywhere in the palace. The food present on the plate turned into feces and no one could even believe what was happening and the king started worrying.

The voice was heard from the blues that queen Sita killed the cow’s calf and buried her in a heap of wheat and this disaster has taken place owing to the same. The shocked king asked how to repent for this sin. Then, the voice was again from the blues and asked to venerate the cow and her calf by taking out buffalo on Govatsa Dwadashi, which was falling on the very next day. Keep in mind to avoid eating cut fruits and consuming milk and this will help you emancipate from sin and the calf will get its breath again.

The king venerated the cow with due ritual in the evening of the very next day and remembered the calf with absolute sincerity and devotion. After performing this, the calf came out from the heap of wheat and stood before the cow. Seeing this, everybody got highly pleased and from the very time, the king ordered everyone to observe the fast of Govatsa Dwadashi.
