Dhanteras : Muhurat, Significance & Yamadeepdaan Pujan Vidhi!

According to Indian religious scriptures and astrology, the festival of Dhanteras will be celebrated on Friday, the 13th of November this year. It is said that on this day Lord Dhanvantari originated from the Sagar Manthan(the divine churning of nectar) with a Kalash(urn), hence this day is known as Dhanteras.

When Dhanvantari appeared, he had an urn full of nectar in his hands. Lord Dhanvantari had appeared with the urn(Kalash) and that is why it is a tradition to buy utensils on this occasion.

According to a general belief, it is also believed that this day’s auspiciousness increases to a great extent by buying things on this day. On this occasion, people buy coriander seeds and keep them in the house. Once Diwali is over, these seeds are sown by people in their gardens or fields following the norms laid down by the scriptures. Also it is believed that by offering Yama-Deepdan on this day, the fear of premature death prevalent in a person’s life gets created. This is the only day in the whole year when Yamraj, the god of death, is worshiped only by offering a lamp.

Some people also make the offerings of lamps on the day of Narak Chaturdashi. It is a tradition to shop on this day. According to Skanda Purana, by doing this on this day, the fear of premature death ends from a person’s mind and life. In the whole year, Yamraj, the god of death, is worshiped on the day of Dhanteras and Roop Chaturdashi. On this day, lamps are lit in the south direction of the house for Yamraj in the evening. It is believed that by doing this, Yamraj is pleased with the people living in that house and no premature dealth’s fear lurks around the family members.

On Thursday, November 12, the Trayodashi Tithi will begin at 9.30 and come to an end on the evening of November 13, at 21.30 pm. For this reason, it will be auspicious to celebrate the festival of Dhanteras on the Pradosh Vyapini Tithi on Friday.

Yamadeepdaan on Dhanteras : The Correct Puja Vidhi

  • The Yamadeepdaan should be done during Pradosh Kaal.
  • For this, take a big lamp made of flour. A lamp made of wheat flour has the ability to soothe the toxic energy waves and the catastrophic negativity (these waves are responsible for premature death).
  • Thereafter, make two long lights to burn with the help of clean cotton. Place them crosswise in the lamp, in such a way that four faces of lights appear outside the lamp.
  • Now fill it with sesame oil and also add some black sesame seeds to it.
  • During the Pradosh Kaal, worship the lamp prepared in this way with Roli, Akshat and flower. After this, place the lamp on, a heap of wheat outside the main door of the house.
  • Before placing the lamp, light it and look at the south direction (south direction is nutritious for Yama Taranga(waves), that is, Yama Taranga (waves) are attracted and projected more from south direction.
  •  Chant ‘Om Yamadeva Namah‘ and offer your greetings in the south direction.
