- On Deva Shayani Ekadashi, wake up before sunrise and take a bath after completing different tasks.
- Chant the name of Shri Hari Lord Vishnu and take the vow of fasting.
- After this, spread a red or yellow colored cloth on a wooden platform and install the idol or picture of Lord Hari.
- Now start worship of Lord Vishnu.
- Before starting the Puja, offer flowers, garlands, yellow sandalwood, Roli, and Akshat to God and also sprinkle a little bit of Gangajal in the area.
- Now offer basil leaves along with the offerings.
- After it, recite the Sahastranam along with Vishnu Chalisa.

As per Padma Purana, Bali, the king of Asuras, had taken control of three worlds with his might. Watching the power of King Bali, Indradev and others got scared and went to search for Lord Vishnu. Then Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Vaman seeing the deities in distress and went to King Bali to beg a few things. Now King Bali also took the form of Vaman and asked Lord Vishnu about his demands. Lord Vishnu asked Bali for three steps of land. The Lord asked the whole earth in the first step and the sky in the second one. When asked for the third step, King Bali got scared and bowed his head for the third step. He asked the lord to step on his head. Lord Vaman did exactly that and this way, Lord Vishnu solved the troubles of the deities.
At the same time, Lord Vishnu became very pleased with King Bali’s charity & nature and asked him to ask for a boon. Bali asked the lord to settle in Patal Lok. To fulfill his wish, then Lord Vishnu went to Patal Lok. After Lord Vishnu went to Patal Lok, Mother Lakshmi became worried alongside all the deities. To bring back her husband, Maa Lakshmi took the form of a woman and reached King Bali. She tied a Rakhi to King Bali as the sign of brother and in return took a promise from King Bali to take back the lord from Patal Lok.
After returning, Lord Vishnu gave a boon to King Bali that he would reside in Patal Lok from Ekadashi of Ashada Shukla Shukla to Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha. The period is considered as Yoga Nidra and the time is referred to as Chaturmas. It is believed that during this period Lord Shiva took control over the creation.
