The tradition of celebrating the last day of Margashirsha month i.e. Purnima in the form of Dattatreya Jayanti has been defined. This year, this auspicious Tithi is going to fall on December 29 and will last till December 30.

As per Hinduism, Lord Dattatreya was born on this very day. He is considered one of the forms of Tridev i.e. Brahma Vishnu and Mahesh. It is believed that Lord Dattatreya has both the forms i.e. Ishwar and Guru within himself. Owing to this very reason, he is also known as Gurudev Datt.

Significance of Dattatreya Jayanti

As per Shastras, Lord Dattatreya was born on Purnima during Pradosh Kaal in Margashirsha month. There is a mention of his birth in the holy book titled Srimad Bhagwat Geeta and as per this book, Lord Dattatreya got education from 24 Gurus and the Dutta community was formed after his name. 

Although Dattatrey Jayanti is celebrated in all the states with great pomp and show but in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, a completely different view is seen. You can also see some famous and unique temples in south India. In this pretext, the Purnima of Margashirsha month is known as Dattatreya Jayanti. It is believed that one is blessed with the fulfillment of all desires of his/her life with the worship of Lord Dattatreya.

As we have already informed you that Dattatreya Jayanti falls on Purnima Tithi in Margashirsha month. This year, Dattatreya Jayanti is going to begin from December 29, Tuesday at 07:55:58 and will last till December 30, Wednesday upto 08:59:21.

Mythological significance of the pathogen

As per the  mythological beliefs, there used to be a learned Rishi named Atri in ancient times. His knowledge was famous in all the three worlds. He had a wife named Anasuya and she would stay with him. Once, his wife got pregnant and he wished for the qualities equivalent to Trideva i.e. Brahma Vishnu and Mahesh by drowning in meditation. All the three wives got envious after knowing the wish of the Rishi and took permission from Trideva to teach a lesson to his wife, Anasuya.  

Then, the Trideva appeared in the form of gods for fulfilling the wish of their wives. After this, they went to Anasuya and asked to beg them in a naked state. Anasuya got astonished after hearing them and sprinkled some drops of water on them while reciting the Mantra. Exactly after this, Trideva took the form of small boys and then, she did breast-feed to all three of them.  

Anasuya narrated the whole incident to Rishi after he had returned home. He responded as if he were knowing the same in advance. He also greeted the three boys wholeheartedly and converted them into a single boy having six hands and  three heads. 

Seeing the miracle of the Rishi, the three wives repented of their mistakes and tendered their apology before Anasuya and requested her to convert the three boys into their original forms. Anasuya agreed to their request and asked her husband to convert them into their original forms.

After coming back in the original forms, they too tendered their apology before Anasuya and blessed the baby forming in her womb. Later, this baby was known as Dattatreya.

Dattatreya Jayanti Pujan Vidhi

• Take a bath and meditate before the sunrise on the day of Dattatreya Jayanti. 
• Taking a bath in a holy river, Kund, Sarovar etc. holds high significance. 
• After taking a bath, resolve to fast while venerating Lord Dattatreya.
• Offer Diya, Dhoop, incense sticks, flowers, camphor etc. to Lord Dattatreya. 
• Apply Tilak of vermilion (Sindoor), turmeric (Haldi) and sandalwood (Chandan) on the idol of Bhagwan Dattatreya. 
• The tradition of performing Bhajan-Kirtan and Jagran has been defined on this very day.
• After this, reciting the Path of Gita is considered to be highly beneficial.
• After completing the method of worship, revolve around the idol/photo for 7 times in the morning as well as in the evening. 
• Recite the Mantra of Lord Dattatreya while revolving.
• Perform the Aarti of the Lord and take his blessings.
• After the Aarti, offer Prasad as Bhog and then distribute the same among others.
• Perform donation as per your financial ability on this very day.

 Mantra of Bhagwan Dattatreya

Recite for following Mantras and eradicate all kinds of Doshas.

“दिगंबरा-दिगंबरा श्रीपाद वल्लभ दिगंबरा”

“तांत्रोक्त दत्तात्रेय मंत्र – ‘ॐ द्रां दत्तात्रेयाय नम:”

“ॐ दिगंबराय विद्महे योगीश्रारय् धीमही तन्नो दत: प्रचोदयात”

“digaṃbarā-digaṃbarā śrīpāda vallabha digaṃbarā”

“tāṃtrokta dattātreya maṃtra – ‘oṃ drāṃ dattātreyāya nama:”

“oṃ digaṃbarāya vidmahe yogīśrāray dhīmahī tanno data: pracodayāta”

• The above cited Mantras are considered to be fruitful. These Mantras eradicate all the hindrances and bless a person with success.

• There are mentions of these mantras in Shastra stating that they remove not only Pitra dosha but also all the Doshas present in the horoscope. 

• In this pretext, if you are suffering from any kind of Doshas, you must recite the above mentioned Mantras.

• Recite the Mantras at least 108 times to get the most desired fruit of life.
