However, due to his busy duties, Yama could never make it. Once, on the Dwitiya Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha, Yama finally visited his sister Yamuna’s house. 

Seeing her brother, Yamuna was overjoyed. She welcomed him with great affection, applied tilak on his forehead, performed his aarti, and served him a delicious meal. Deeply touched by her love and respect, Yama asked his sister to ask for a boon. Yamuna expressed her wish that on this day, every sister should apply tilak to her brother and pray for his long life. Whoever follows this tradition would be free from the fear of Yama, the God of Death. Yama granted her this boon. Since then, this day has been celebrated as Bhai Dooj. That is why it is also called Yam Dwitiya, and on this day, the sacred bond between brothers and sisters grows even stronger.

Regional Significance Of Bhai Dooj
