Significance Of Anant Chaturdashi

The very name, Anant Chaturdashi, carried a deep spiritual meaning. Anant means “endless” or “infinite,” and Chaturdashi refers to the 14th day of the lunar fortnight. This day is considered a special occasion to worship the infinite form of Lord Vishnu. Observing a fast and tying the Anant Sutra, a sacred thread, on this day is believed to end the ongoing troubles and mark the beginning of happiness, prosperity, good health, and peace.

According to religious beliefs, fasting on Anant Chaturdashi frees a person from the cycle of rebirth, removes sins, and grants moksha. The day serves as a reminder of the infinite divine power that sustains the universe, and taking refuge in it can free one from life’s sorrows. Worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day is said to maintain peace and harmony in the family and remove poverty from the household.

This day also marks the conclusion of Ganesh Utsav, when Lord Ganesha is bidden a heartfelt farewell through the Visarjan. Devotees chant, “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Agle Baras Tu Jaldi Aa” (O Lord Ganesha, come back soon next year) and pray for his swift reappearance to bless their homes once again. Those who observe the Anant Chaturdashi fast with devotion and discipline, worship Lord Vishnu, and tie the Anant Sutra on their right wrist are believed to be protected from scarcity, illness, and obstacles in life. This fast is also considered highly beneficial for family happiness, marital harmony, and success.

Anant Chaturdashi 2025: Katha

According to a mythological legend, in ancient times, there lived a Brahmin named Sumant in India. His wife’s name was Deeksha, his son’s name was Devaki, and his daughter-in-law’s name was Sushila. Sushila was a deeply religious, disciplined, and virtuous woman. One day, Sumant went on a pilgrimage with his wife Deeksha, leaving his son Devaki and daughter-in-law Sushila at the home of his friend, Sage Kaundinya. Kaundinya lived in an ashram where life was simple and orderly.

In the ashram, Sushila saw many women observing the Anant Chaturdashi fast. These women, dressed in beautiful clothes, were worshipping Lord Vishnu and then offering the Anant Sutra to him before tying it on their hands. They told her that observing this fast brings an end to all sorrows and brings happiness and prosperity in life. Sushila, with devotion, observed the fast and tied the Anant Sutra on her left hand. Devaki and Sushila later took leave from Sage Kaundinya and returned to their city. Gradually, their home became filled with wealth, peace, and prosperity. Good news began coming from all directions.

When Kaundinya saw this, he was surprised and asked his wife the reason for such prosperity. Sushila humbly explained that it was all due to the blessings of the Anant Chaturdashi fast and the Anant Sutra. Hearing this, Kaundinya became angry. He said, “This is all superstition! What can a thread possibly do?” He then forcibly removed the Anant Sutra from Sushila’s hand and burnt it in the fire. After this, troubles slowly began to enter their lives. Their wealth was lost, the peace of the home was disturbed, and they were surrounded by illness and hardships.

Filled with regret and seeking to make amends, Kaundinya realized his mistake. He asked Lord Anant for forgiveness and wandered from forest to forest in search of him. Hungry, thirsty, exhausted, and performing penance, he eventually fainted and fell to the ground. At that moment, Lord Vishnu appeared before him in his Anant form and said, “O Kaundinya! You insulted my symbol, the Anant Sutra, and that is why you suffered these hardships. Now, once again, observe the Anant Chaturdashi fast with devotion, tie the Anant Sutra, and tell others about its glory. Then all your troubles will come to an end.”

Kaundinya duly observed the fast, tied the Anant Sutra, and returned peace and happiness to his life. From that time onwards, the tradition of observing the Anant Chaturdashi fast has continued.
