The religious scriptures describe a legend associated with Amalaki Ekadashi, which is narrated below.

According to a mythological tale, in ancient times there was a city named Vaidik. Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras all lived together in this city. All the residents of this city were ardent devotees of Lord Vishnu and remained constantly immersed in His worship and devotion. The king of Vaidik city, Chaitrarath, was learned and deeply righteous. There was no poor person in his kingdom, and every resident of the city observed all the Ekadashi fasts that occurred throughout the year.

As every year, when Amalaki Ekadashi of the Phalguna month arrived, the king and all the citizens observed the fast. They went to the temple, worshipped the amla tree, and stayed awake the entire night in devotion (jagran). That same night, a hunter (Baheliya), who was very sinful, arrived at the temple. He was hungry and thirsty and had come in search of food. He quietly sat in a corner of the temple and began watching the night vigil. While sitting there, he listened with sincere attention to the stories glorifying Lord Vishnu and the significance of Ekadashi along with everyone else. In this way, the entire night passed.

Along with all the townspeople, the hunter also remained awake throughout the night. In the morning, everyone returned to their homes, and the hunter too went back to his house and ate food. However, some time later, the hunter passed away. Although in the form of a hunter he had neither intentionally observed the fast nor performed rituals, he had listened to the Amalaki Ekadashi Vrat Katha and remained awake the whole night. As a result of this merit, he was reborn in the house of King Vidurath and was named Vasurath, who later became the king of the city.

One day, King Vasurath went out hunting but lost his way in the forest. Tired and exhausted, he fell asleep under a tree. After some time, some Mlechchhas arrived there and, seeing the king alone, planned to kill him. They said that it was because of this king that they had been exiled, and therefore he should be killed. Unaware of their attack, the king continued to sleep as they began hurling weapons at him. Miraculously, the weapons turned into flowers as they struck the king.

After a while, all the Mlechchhas were found lying dead on the ground. When the king awoke, he saw several people lying lifeless. Understanding the situation, the king realized that they had come to kill him, but someone else had destroyed them. As he wondered who could have saved his life in the forest, a divine voice declared, “O King, Lord Vishnu has protected you. In your previous birth, you listened to the Amalaki Ekadashi Vrat Katha, and it is the result of that merit that your enemies could not harm you today.”

After this incident, the king also began observing the Ekadashi fast with full devotion and according to proper rituals.

• On Amalaki Ekadashi 2026, tulsi leaves should also be included in the worship. The scriptures state that tulsi is extremely dear to Lord Vishnu.
