The Story Behind Sawan Monday Fasting (Sawan Somwar)

In the ancient legend, there lived a prosperous merchant in a city who, despite his abundant wealth, was burdened by the absence of children. To conceive a child, he faithfully worshiped Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati every Monday and observed a strict fast. Deeply moved by the merchant’s devotion, Goddess Parvati beseeched Lord Bholenath to grant him the boon of having a son. However, Lord Shiva revealed that it was not destined for him to experience the happiness of parenthood.

Nevertheless, owing to the persistent appeals of Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva granted the merchant the blessing of fatherhood, but cautioned that the child would have a short life. While the merchant’s son came into existence as a result of Lord Bholenath’s boon, the merchant himself neither experienced joy nor sorrow since he knew his son’s life would be brief.

At the age of 11, the merchant sent his son along with his maternal uncle to Kashi (Varanasi) for acquiring an education. Before their departure, the merchant advised his son to offer meals to Brahmins and make charitable donations, as well as perform sacred rituals wherever they stopped on their journey. During their travels, the merchant’s son and his maternal uncle encountered a peculiar situation where the princess of a kingdom was set to marry a blind prince.

Seizing this opportunity, the prince’s father, taking advantage of the merchant’s son’s presence, replaced the blind prince with him as the groom, and the wedding proceeded as planned. On the veil of the princess, the merchant’s son wrote the truth, informing her that although they were married, the prince she was supposed to accompany to her new home was blind. Upon learning this, the princess immediately called off the wedding.

Subsequently, upon reaching Kashi, the merchant’s son had reached the age of 16. However, soon after turning 16, his health started to deteriorate, and within a few days, he passed away. Witnessing the grief of his maternal uncle, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati happened to pass by. Upon seeing the deceased, Lord Shiva identified him as the merchant’s son. This revelation deeply saddened Goddess Parvati, who implored Lord Shiva to revive the merchant’s son. Moved by the repeated pleas of Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva restored the merchant’s son to life.

Upon completing his education, when the merchant’s son was returning to his hometown with his maternal uncle, they halted at the same place where his ill-fated wedding had taken place. The king recognized the merchant’s son and, understanding the truth, bestowed upon him great wealth and permitted his daughter to accompany him. Upon learning of this, the merchant was overwhelmed with joy.

That night, Lord Shiva appeared in the merchant’s dream and conveyed that his blessings were a result of the merchant’s observance of the Monday fast and his attentiveness to the story associated with the fast, assuring him that his son would have a long and prosperous life.
