Rituals To Follow On Magha Purnima

  • Venerate Lord Vishnu after taking a bath in the morning on the day of Magha Purnima.
  • Perform Tarpan of ancestors after the worship.
  • Then, donate clothes, blankets, sesame, jaggery, ghee etc. to the needy and serve them with food as per your financial capacity. 
  • Besides this, donation of gold and silver is considered to be highly auspicious.
  • If possible, you can donate cow as well on this day and this is considered to be beneficial. 
  • Observing this fast holds high significance as it is believed that one is blessed with the fulfillment of all desires of life.
  • If possible, one has to observe this fast without having anything. However, if it is not possible then they can take fruits in the evening.
  • On this day, the observer of this fast should not get angry at others.
  • It is said one who observes this fast with self-restraint, must be blessed with full fruit.

Significance of Magha Purnima

There is a mention about the significance of Magha Purnima in ancient scriptures. It is said that it is the very day when deities come down on earth to take a bath in Prayagraj by changing their identity. Those devotees who perform Kalpavas on the banks of Prayagraj, end the same on the day of Magha Purnima. They also worship the holy river, the Ganga. After this, they serve saints and Brahmins with food. It is believed that one who takes a bath in Ganga on this very day, gets rid of all sorrows and diseases.    

Information: Kalpavas means staying on the banks of Sangam and meditating there. It is a resolution of patience, non-violence and devotion.

Things to be Done after Taking a Bath on Magha Purnima

Taking a bath holds high significance on Magha Purnima. It is believed that one gets rid of all diseases and sorrows with the bath on this very day. Let’s know what a person should do after taking a bath in Ganga. 

  • Offer water to the Sun on this day and bow down before him.
  • Recite the Mantra ‘ॐ घृणि सूर्याय नमः’ / ‘oṃ ghṛṇi sūryāya namaḥ’ 108 times. 
  • Take an oath to fast and perform Tarpan of ancestors with black sesame and then do Havan.
  • Do not tell a lie and speak ill of anyone on this very day.

Legend/Katha of Magha Purnima Vrat

There used to be a Brahmin named Dhaneshwar in Kantika town. He used to survive on donations. Brahmin and his wife had no child. In this context, once she came begging but the people refused and insulted her by calling childless (Baanjh). Then, both of them venerated Maa Kali for 16 days on the advice of a person and after being pleased with their devotion, she appeared and asked them to wish for a boon. After this, they desired to be blessed with a child. 

Then, Maa Kali gave blessings to his wife to get pregnant and told her to light a lamp/Diya on every Purnima and add one more to the next Purnima. Then, they started observing fast and Brahmin gave a raw mango to his wife for worship.     

Brahmin’s wife got pregnant by the influence of worship and continued to light lamps/Diyas on every Purnima. After this, they were blessed with a son by the grace of Maa Kali and named him Devdas. When he grew up, he was sent to Kashi with his maternal uncle for studies. Then, an incident happened over there due to which a deceitful marriage of Devdas was arranged. Although he said that he was not of the marriageable age, forcibly, he was married.

Things to be Done on Magha Purnima

As per the beliefs of Hindu religion, it is believed that Lord Vishnu dips in Gangajal on Magha Purnima. In this pretext, you should take a bath by putting some drops of Gangajal in ordinary water after being free from your daily routine. Also, donate sesame, fruits, food, blankets etc. to the needy while remembering your ancestors.   

Remedy to Get Rid of Pitru Dosha

It is believed that one who performs Tarpan of their ancestors, gets free from Pitru Dosha and steps towards salvation. If Rahu or Ketu is present along with the Sun-Moon in one’s Kundali, they are advised to perform Tarpan of their ancestors on Magha Purnima.
