The Tithi of Ekadashi holds high significance in the realm of Hinduism. Different Ekadashis are celebrated in different months throughout the year and Utpanna Ekadashi is one of them. As per mythological beliefs, Maa Ekadashi was born on this very day and therefore, the day is known as Utpanna Ekadashi.
Maa Ekadashi is considered to be the power of Lord Vishnu. In this pretext, it is believed that Maa Ekadashi killed a demon named Mur after she was born. As per the belief of Hinduism, Lord Vishnu himself gave blessings to Maa Ekadashi on the day of Utpanna Ekadashi and revered this fast.

When will Utpanna Ekadashi be Celebrated?
Ekadashi is celebrated on different days in different parts of the country. Where, on one side, this Ekadashi falls in Margashirsha in north India while on the other, the same Ekadashi is celebrated in Kartik month in south India. If we talk about north India, this Ekadashi is going to be celebrated on December 11, 2020.

Utpanna Ekadashi Pujan Vidhi
- Wear clean clothes after taking a bath early in the morning and meditate on Lord Krishna and sprinkle Gangajal in the house.
- Then, put the idol of Lord Ganesha and Lord Shri Krishna.
- In the very beginning of the worship, offer Manjaris of Tulsi to Lord Ganesha.
- After this, offer Dhoop, lamp/Diya, Naivedya, Roli and Akshat to Lord Vishnu.
- After worshipping, observe the fast of Utpanna Ekadashi and must keep in mind to hear the legend concerning the same.
- Perform Aarti after the worship and distribute Prasad among others.
The fast of Ekadashi should be observed after the sunrise. Avoid eating food and serve the needy as per your financial ability on this very day. Perform donation before you end your fast and serve the Brahman with food and then, complete the fast. This is considered to be highly auspicious and fruitful.

Significance of Utpanna Ekadashi
Utpanna Ekadashi holds high significance in Hinduism. It is believed about this fast that one who observes the same with pure intention and absolute sincerity, gets free from all sins of his/her life. Not only this, it is also said that one who wishes to observe the fast of Ekadashi should begin with the fast of Utpanna Ekadashi.

On the day of Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu killed the demon named Murasura. In this pretext, the tradition of celebrating this Ekadashi has been defined in reverence to Lord Vishnu. On this day, the tradition of venerating Lord Vishnu and Maa Ekadashi and observing the fast has been defined on the same day.

Legend Concerning Utpanna Ekadashi
As per mythology, there used to be a demon named Mura in Satyuga. He was very strong and brave. He conquered Devaloka (heaven) after defeating Indra, Aditya, Vasu, Vayu, Agni etc. through his force. Being fed up with the destruction of the demon, the deities approached Lord Shiva and narrated everything to him.
All the deities referred to Lord Shiva as Kailashpati and said that the gods were moving at the place of death due to the powers of the demon. After hearing all the deities, Lord Shiva said that they were the lords of all the three worlds and asked the deities to enter the place of Lord Vishnu as he would help the gods get rid of this problem.
All the deities went towards Kshirsagar after hearing Lord Shiva. Then, they bowed down before Lord Vishnu and asked him to help gods get rid of the fear of the demon. After this, Lord Vishnu asked the deities who the demon was and how he had defeated all the gods.
Then, Lord Indra said that there used to be a demon named Nadijung in the ancient times. He had a son named Mura. He had a city named Chandravati. He compelled them to quit heaven through his powers and conquered the same. Now, he had taken the shape of the Sun and spread the light himself and also, had made himself the cloud.
After hearing the deities, Lord Vishnu said that he himself would destroy the demon. Further, he advised them to go to Chandravati city. All the deities and the gods started walking towards the city. At that time, the demon named Mura was thundering in the battlefield along with his Sena. His thunder was so strong that all the deities began to run here and there. When Lord Vishnu came into the battlefield, the demon attacked him with Astra, Shastra, and Aayudh.
This fight lasted for a long time. Almost all the Demons were killed besides Mura. The fight between Lord Vishnu and Mura lasted for almost 10 years but Mura was neither defeated nor killed in the battlefield. Then, Lord Vishnu went to Badrikashram after being sick and tired of everything. There used to be a beautiful cave named Hemvati and he went to take rest in the same. It is said that this cave was 12 Yojan long and had only one gate. There, Lord Vishnu slept in Yoganidra’s lap.
The demon reached the place by following Lord Vishnu and tried to attack him. At that time, a bright and radiant Devi was born from the body of Lord Vishnu and provoked Mura for a fight and finally, killed him.
Then, Lord Hari came out from the slumber and got to know about everything and told Devi that she was born on the day of Ekadashi and therefore, she would be referred as Utpanna Ekadashi and would be worshipped by the people.
