Narak Chaturdashi 2025: The Mythological Story

Narak Chaturdashi, also known as Roop Chaudas or Chhoti Diwali, holds deep significance in Hindu mythology. It is believed that on this day, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura, freeing the world from his tyranny. According to the story, Narakasura was a powerful and cruel demon who, using his strength, took control over Indralok (the abode of Indra) and other realms and imprisoned 16,000 celestial maidens. His terror caused fear among gods, sages, and humans alike.

In the end, all the gods prayed to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu promised that he would kill Narakasura, but this would only be possible with the permission of his wife, Bhudevi (Mother Earth). When the time came, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Krishna. With the consent of Mother Bhudevi, Lord Krishna, along with his wife Satyabhama, defeated Narakasura in battle. After Narakasura’s death, all the celestial maidens were freed, and the world was liberated from his terror.

That day fell on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. Since then, this day has been celebrated as Narak Chaturdashi. On this day, it is traditional to take a bath with oil and scrub in the early morning. It is believed that this special bath and the offering of lamps destroy sins and remove the fear of Narak, which is why the day is called Narak Chaturdashi.

Narak Chaturdashi symbolizes the triumph of truth over falsehood, justice over injustice, and virtue over sin. Worshipping Lord Krishna and offering lamps on this day is believed to bring happiness, prosperity, and peace into the home.
