The Story Of Goddess Skandamata
According to mythology, in ancient times, the atrocities of demons kept increasing day by day. The most powerful and mighty among them was a demon named Tarakasura. Through severe penance, he obtained a boon from Lord Shiva that he could be killed only by the son of Lord Shiva himself. Because of this boon, he became invincible, and even the gods lived in fear of him. Troubled by Tarakasura’s terror, all the gods and sages sought refuge in Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. They prayed for the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati so that a son could be born who would be capable of slaying Tarakasura. From their union, Kartikeya was born.
Skanda (another name for Kartikeya) was a radiant and valiant child. The gods appointed him as their commander. At a very young age, he demonstrated his extraordinary strength and bravery, and in a fierce battle, he killed Tarakasura. This is why Goddess Parvati is revered as Skandamata, the mother of Skanda. Maa Skandamata is depicted holding her son in her lap while blessing her devotees. This form of the Goddess embodies affection, compassion, and the tender love of motherhood.
