Varuthini Ekadashi Fasting Method
On this day, people who are serving fast must adhere to celibacy. He must not carry grudges, hatred, or treachery while observing fast. He should worship with a pure mind and meditate.
- A day prior to observing the fast, i.e. on Dashmi, devotees should take only one meal.
- On the day of observing the fast, one must wake up early and take a divine bath.
- Take an oath to fast with pure mind and soul and pray to God.
- Avoid consuming oily food, grains, honey, pulses, Masoor lentils, and using bronze vessels when you are fasting.
- Perform Jagran at night, and on the next day on Dwadashi, open your fast.
- Read holy scriptures and hymn Kirtan.

These Practices Are Forbidden On This Day
On Varuthini Ekadashi, there are some practices that must not be performed, not even by mistake, because there is a belief that by doing this, we will lose the benefits of observing this fast.
- On this day, practices like gambling, sleeping, brushing teeth, gossiping, stealing, losing temper, and telling lies are forbidden.
- Besides this, eating meat, alcohol consumption, consuming onion, garlic, grains, etc. is prohibited. As it is believed that non-vegetarian food, onion and garlic are considered devilish food and their consumption impure the mind of the human.
It is mentioned in the Bhavishya Purana that:
कांस्यं मांसं मसूरान्नं चणकं कोद्रवांस्तथा।
शाकं मधु परान्नं च पुनर्भोजनमैथुने।।
kāṃsyaṃ māṃsaṃ masūrānnaṃ caṇakaṃ kodravāṃstathā।
śākaṃ madhu parānnaṃ ca punarbhojanamaithune।।
It Means: On the day of Ekadashi, avoid using bronze utensils, consumption of meat, Masoor lentils, etcetera. On this Ekadashi Tithi, one must observe fast. Along with it, one must quit the habit of gambling and deep sleeping on this day.

Mythology Associated With Varuthini Ekadashi
Once upon a time when Arjun appealed to Lord Krishna to describe the myth of fasting on Varuthini Ekadashi and its significance, then Lord Krishna narrated that:
In ancient times, on the bank of the Narmada River, there was a kingdom of the king named Mandhata. He was a philanthropist and monk. One day, he was doing penance in the forest. He was deeply into the severe penance when a wild bear came and started biting his feet. After this, the bear dragged him to the dense forest. At that time the king got anxious but he adhered to penance and neither got angry nor did he do any violence, he just prayed to the Lord Vishnu.
After hearing the prayer of the king, Lord Vishnu appeared and he killed the bear with his Chakra and he rescued the king from the hardship. But till then, the bear had eaten the foot of the king and the king was yearning in pain and it was hurtful to king Mandhata. Seeing the king in severe pain, Lord Vishnu said, “My son, go to Mathura and worship my Varaha Avatar Idol and observe Varuthini Ekadashi fast. By doing this your injury will be recovered. Actually, it happened to you because of the sins you committed in your past birth.
The king obeyed Lord Vishnu and served Varuthini Ekadashi fast with true loyalty and complete devotion. By doing so, his foot recovered well as before. Since that day, in the Hindu religion, Varuthini Ekadashi fast holds special significance.
Perform These Remedies To Get Rid Of Various Problems
- On the day Varuthini Ekadashi, worship the Lord Vishnu in a due manner. After that, light an earthen lamp of nine 9 candle wicks in the night in front of his idol or a photograph. Along with it, enlight one more earthen lamp and leave it to glow for the whole night. This practice not only pleases Lord Vishnu but also Goddess Laxmi and showers the blessings of prosperity.
- To keep your home filled with happiness and prosperity, wake up early on Varuthini Ekadashi and take a divine bath. After taking the bath, duly worship Lord Vishnu. Then, take a garland of basil leaves and chant the “ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय/ oṃ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya” Mantra. Keep in mind that you need to chant this Mantra at least once on the basil garland. You can do it more than one time as well.
- If you are in debt and despite your efforts, if it keeps on increasing then, take some water in a pot, add some sugar to it, and offer it to a Peeple tree. In the evening, light ghee lamps in the roots of the Peepal tree because it is believed that the Peepal tree is the habitat of Lord Vishnu. There is a faith that through this remedy, a native start to save money, resulting in a decrease in debt.
- For the family’s well being, light a pure ghee lamp in the basil (Tulsi) plant and worship the Goddess Tulsi on Ekadashi evening. After this, circumambulate 11 times while chanting the “ॐ वासुदेवाय नमः/ oṃ vāsudevāya namaḥ” Mantra. It will keep your house’s ambience peaceful and favourable.
