A long time ago, a king named Madhanta used to rule a kingdom situated near the banks of the river Narmada. He was a benevolent ruler and quite popular amongst his folk and many other places because of his kind-hearted nature. At the same time, he practiced some deep austerity and was an avid worshipper of Lord Vishnu.
One fine day, when the king went to a faraway kingdom to perform meditation. He sat down a very huge tree and started his austerity. As soon as he attacked, a wild bear came out of nowhere and attacked him.
He was deeply engaged in his meditation, which is why the king did not say anything or tried to save himself. The bear started chewing the king’s leg but he did not give up his meditation. But, he started seeking help from Lord Vishnu and chanted his name.

Witnessing the plight of king Madhanta, he appeared and tore the bear down into pieces by striking him with the Sudarshan Chakra. By the time Lord Vishnu arrived, the bear had already devoured the King’s leg. It is then Lord Vishnu spoke, “ O dear devotee, you need not worry. The Krishna Paksha of the month of Vaisakh is known as Varuthini Ekadashi. You worship me on this day by following all the rites and rituals. After doing so, you will become all healthy once again.”
Speaking further, Lord Vishnu also said that whatever bears the king’s surface did, it is the fruit of the sin of the previous birth of the king. Fasting and worshiping on Varuthini Ekadashi will erase all sins of the king. By obeying the Lord, the king worshiped Varuthini Ekadashi fast. As a result, he got his organs back in the same condition as before.
