Why Did Goddess Tulsi Curse Lord Vishnu?

According to mythological tales, Jalandhar was the king of demons who was troubling the gods with his power. His strength was derived from his wife, Vrinda, who was an incarnation of Tulsi. Vrinda was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu and was extremely loyal to her husband. Due to her devotion and penance, Jalandhar could not be defeated in battle.

When Jalandhar waged war against Lord Shiva and it became impossible to defeat him, the gods sought help from Lord Vishnu. To eliminate Jalandhar, Lord Vishnu devised a plan. He deceitfully took on the form of Jalandhar and approached Vrinda. Mistaking him for her husband, Vrinda welcomed him and broke her vow of fidelity. As a result, Jalandhar’s power diminished, and Lord Shiva killed him in battle.

When Vrinda realized that the figure she had accepted as her husband was actually Lord Vishnu and that her real husband Jalandhar was dead, she was filled with sorrow. She cursed Lord Vishnu for deceiving her, stating that His wife Lakshmi would be separated from Him. Due to the effect of this curse, Lord Vishnu had to be separated from His wife Lakshmi for some time, who later incarnated on Earth as Ram and Sita.

After cursing Vishnu, Vrinda renounced her body. In admiration of her devotion and fidelity, Lord Vishnu granted her the boon of immortality. He blessed her to remain immortal as Tulsi and declared that no worship would be complete without her presence. Following this, Tulsi was married to Lord Vishnu’s Shaligram form.
