There is a mention about this fast in Padma Purana that one who performs donation and worships with absolute devotion and pious heart on this day, attains salvation (Moksha) in life and emancipates from all sins.

The fast of Shattila Ekadashi is considered to be highly fruitful. It is believed that it gives fruits equivalent to that of Kanyadan.   • Wake up early in the morning, take a bath and venerate Lord Vishnu. Offer Khichdi of sesame and Urad as Bhog to him.   
  • It is believed that using sesame as many ways as it can be, proves to be more beneficial.  
  • One should adopt disciplined life before the day of Shattila Ekadashi. It means that the observer of the fast should not eat food on the night of Dashami, a day before Ekadashi. 
  • One should resolve to fast with absolute devotion by sacrificing the spirit of anger, greed, attachment etc and then, worship. 
  • This fast is observed without consuming water. However, those who are unable to observe without water, are advised to eat fruits.   
  • On this day, worship Lord Vishnu in the evening again. Light a lamp/Diya before Tulsi. 
  • Break your fast on the following day i.e. Dwadashi.
  • Serve food to the Brahmins before the end of fast and perform donations as per your financial capacity.

Take an oath to fast and worship while meditating Lord Vishnu after taking a bath in Brahma Muhurat and completing your daily work. Place the idol/photo of Lord Vishnu on an elevated plank. Shattila Ekadashi Vrat Katha Bhagwan Vishnu (Lord Vishnu)

There is a mention of Shattila Ekadashi fast in Padma Purana and according to it, there used to be a lady in ancient times. She was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. She used to worship him and observe fast with absolute devotion. The fast made her body and soul pure but she never donated food. She got an empty hut after she had died. She asked Lord Vishnu why she was given an abandoned hut. Then, Lord Vishnu replied that she had never donated food and hence, she was gifted with the same. Once, he went to her for begging, she gave him a lump of clay.    

            

She asked what she could do to overcome her mistake. Then, Lord Vishnu advised her to observe the fast of Shattila Ekadashi. Further, she did as suggested and thus, her hut got surrounded with food and she started leading her life peacefully in Baikuntha.
