Due to this, many festivals and fasts are observed to appease him but the Sankashti Chaturthi fast is the most special and auspicious of them all.
The term ‘Sankashti’ is taken from Sanskrit which translates to ‘getting rid of tough times. So, Sankashti Chaturthi means the Chaturthi that frees from the crisis. This fast is believed to be observed to get rid of suffering and for the sake of children. The devotees observe a fast from sunrise to moonrise on Sankashti Chaturthi and worship Lord Ganesh with proper rituals.
It is said that the negative energies from the house are eliminated by worshiping Lord Ganesh on this day and life becomes peaceful and harmonious. Sakat Chauth: Right Worship Rituals
- Take a bath by waking up early on this day and then take a fasting vow.
- Start the Puja by worshiping lord Ganesh.
- Make sure that you are facing the east or north direction while worshiping Lord Ganesh.
- Include sesame, jaggery, flowers, water in a copper vessel, sandalwood, Bhog, Prasad, banana, coconut, etc. in the Puja.
- Place Goddess Durga’s idol while performing the Puja as it is considered auspicious.
- Then, offer flowers and Bhog while chanting this Mantra-
gajānanaṃ bhūta gaṇādi sevitaṃ, kapittha jambū phala cārū bhakṣaṇam।
umāsutaṃ śoka vināśakārakam, namāmi vighneśvara pāda paṃkajam।।
गजाननं भूत गणादि सेवितं, कपित्थ जम्बू फल चारू भक्षणम्।
उमासुतं शोक विनाशकारकम्, नमामि विघ्नेश्वर पाद पंकजम्।।
- Only adhere to a fruit diet on this day. Many people consume rock salt on this day. However, if it is possible avoid the consumption of any kind of salt on this day.
- After this, you should worship Lord Ganesha when the Moon rises early in the evening. Listen to the Katha of Sakat Chauth and even read it out loud.
- Distribute the Prasad amongst people after the Puja is complete.
- The fast of this day can be completed once you view the Moon during the night.
Shubh Yogas On Sakat Chauth This Year
In general, the day of Sakat Chauth is considered to be very auspicious. But, to make this day even more special, there will also be a conjunction of many special Yogas on this day. We would also like the readers to know that this First Sakat Chauth of the year is giving birth to many fortunes. It can also be called Saubhagya Yoga. This particular Yoga will begin early in the morning and last till 3:06 pm in the afternoon. It has been said that
Apart from this, Shubhan Yoga is also created on Sakat Chauth. Shubhan Yoga is going to start from this day till the afternoon of 22nd January. According to beliefs, it is said that both these auspicious Yogas are very lucky and fortunate.
Additionally, let us also inform you that, on the 21st of January, Magha Nakshatra will begin at 9.43 am. It is not always auspicious to carry out holy tasks during Magha Nakshatra. Hence, readers are advised to perform the Puja of Sakat Chauth only after the Magha Nakshatra gets over. The Purva Phalguni Nakshatra will only begin after 9:43 pm. In such a situation, you can resume any auspicious work or initiate one while this Nakshatra goes on.
Things To Avoid On Sakat Chauth
Do not wear black colored clothes even by mistake on the day of Sakat Chauth.
As per the practices and rituals of Hinduism, it is considered an ill omen to wear black on any holy or festive day, but especially on the day of Sakat Chauth, avoid wearing this color. If you want, you can wear yellow or red coloured clothes while praying on this day as it will turn out to be very beneficial for you.
After worshiping Lord Ganesha on the day of Sakat Chauth, there is also a special practice of offering Arghya to the Moon. While offering Arghya to Moon, keep in mind that it should be done only after mixing rice and milk in water. Also, keep in mind that when you are offering Arghya to the Moon, then the water should not get sprinkled on your feet.
Apart from this, the fast of Sakat Chauth is complete only after worshiping Lord Ganesha, viewing the Moon and offering Arghya to the Moon. In such a situation, do not break the fast without worshiping the Moon and offering Arghya to it.
Tulsi or basil leaves are often used in Puja(s) and any other holy activity associated with Hinduism. However, keep in mind to never offer Tulsi leaves to Lord Ganesha on the day of Sakat Chauth. As Durva grass is very dear to Lord Ganesha, so you can definitely offer Durva grass to him on this particular day.
Rituals Associated With Sakat Chauth
On this day, there is a tradition of worshiping Lord Ganesha and Chandra Dev on this day.
For their children’s longevity and good life, women observe a Nirjala fast on this day.
Sesame (Til) ladoos are made on the day of Sakat Chauth. Apart from this, many people make a huge pile of Sesame seeds on this day and then cut it just like a cake.
In many places, people also break their fast by looking at the stars.
The Puja associated with this day is only considered complete after offering Arghya to the Moon or stars in the evening and after duly adhering to all the rituals.
