Sankashti Chaturthi: Vrat Katha

There are many mythological stories associated with Sankashti Chaturthi but we will tell you the most popular among them.

Once upon a time, Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati were sitting by a river, and suddenly Maa Parvati felt like playing Chaupar and she expressed her wish. But at that time, there was no one else besides the two, who could play the role of a judge. To resolve this issue, Maa Parvati and Lord Shiva made a clay idol of a child and put life in it. Then they instructed the clay idol to judge the game carefully and decide who is winning. Then they started the game and Maa Parvati was winning most matches.

One time, the idol made a decision against Maa Parvati, which angered her and she cursed him to become limp. The child apologized to the Goddess several times and after seeing his efforts, she said that she cannot take back the curse but there is a solution that can free him of the curse. As a remedy, the Goddess said that some girls come here to worship on the day of Sankashti, so you ask them the method of fasting with a true heart.

The child then asked for the method of fasting as mentioned by the Goddess and observed the fast with devotion. This appeased Lord Ganesh and he asked for his wish. He said he wanted to visit Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Ganesh took him to the Shivlok to fulfill his wish. On reaching there, the child realized that only Lord Shiva was present there. Actually, during that time, Maa Parvati left Kailash as she was upset with Lord Shiva. Seeing that child there, Lord Shiva asked him how he came there. Answering this, the child said that by worshiping Lord Ganesh, he has received this boon. After knowing this, Lord Shiva also observed a fast for Sankashti to persuade Maa Parvati and then she returned to Kailash.

So, it is believed that observing the Sankashti Chaturthi fast fulfills all wishes of a person.
