In this regard, this day is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Sun. Usually, the rituals of Ratha Saptami are carried out two days after the festival of Basant Panchami. Significance of Ratha Saptami

 As per prevailing belief concerning Ratha Saptami, this day is considered to be the beginning of summer season and there are signs of change in the climatic conditions in parts of southern India. In addition to this, this day is also considered auspicious for farming. It is said that one who gives donations to the needy with a pious heart, gets rid of all past and present sins of life. Also, he/she gets blessed with longevity, prosperity and good health. 

On this day, there is a tradition of taking a bath at dawn. It is also believed that whosoever takes a bath in holy rivers, gets rid of all diseases especially, skin related infections and therefore, this Saptami is known as Arogya Saptami in several parts of the country. On the other hand, the saints consider this day as Achal Saptami.

Rituals of Ratha Saptami

  • Taking a bath at dawn bears special significance. There is a belief that one gets rid of diseases and sins after bathing.
  • Devotees in Tamil Nadu use Iruku leaves for this holy bath and offer water to Lord Sun from a pot after bathing.
  • Recite different names of Lord Sun 12 times to get more benefits.
  • Light the lamp/Diya filled with ghee and worship Lord Sun by offering red flowers and lightning incense sticks.
  • Women make a photo of Lord Sun along with his chariot to welcome him and make Rangoli at the entrance.
  • On this day, milk is poured in clay pots in the courtyard and it is said that it begins to boil with the heat of the Sun. Then, it is used to prepare Prasad and later offered as Bhog to Lord Sun.

Significance of Ratha Saptami

Beej Mantra of Lord Sun

Ratha Saptami is directly associated with Lord Sun and therefore, reciting Beej Mantra  ‘  ‘ ऊँ घृणि सूर्याय नम:’ ūm̐ ghṛṇi sūryāya nama:’ and ‘ ॐ सूर्याय नम:’ / aura ‘ oṃ sūryāya nama:’ is considered to be fruitful and sacred on this very day.
