Parivartini Ekadashi Folklore

The fast’s story originates from Tretayug. According to folklore, an asura king named Bali ruled in Tretayug. Despite his Asura nature, the king was a generous philanthropist and a devout follower of Lord Shri Vishnu. He used to worship God according to the laws every day. Nobody left the king’s palace empty-handed. Lord Vishnu, in his Vamana incarnation, is thought to have taken King Bali’s test. The deities were displeased because King Bali had gained dominion of all three realms. But the monarch had a unique characteristic in that he never let any Brahmin who came to his door leave empty-handed; instead, he used to give him alms.

Demon Guru Shukracharya also made him aware of Lord Vishnu’s pastimes, but King Bali nevertheless granted Lord Vishnu’s pledge of three steps of land. However, Lord Vishnu measured all the worlds in the first and second steps, leaving nothing for the third, so Bali, following his promise, put his head under his feet.

Bali began residing in Patal Lok thanks to Lord Vishnu’s favor, but King Bali also invited Lord Vishnu to stay with him. After that, Lord Vishnu accepted the king’s words. It is believed that hearing and reading this story will lead to salvation.
