Legend Associated with Padmini Ekadashi Vrat

There used to be a king in Treta Yuga named Keetravirya. This king had many queens but was not blessed with a son from any of his wives. Never being blessed with a child,  the lives of the king and all the queens were in a shadow of sadness despite having all other comforts. One day, the king along with his queens stepped out for performing deep austerity to be blessed with a child.

They, i.e. the king along with his queens, performed deep meditation for thousands of years. During this, the king was reduced to bones but their meditation did not pay them off. Seeing the painful condition of the king, the queen asked Anusuya Devi for the remedy. Then, Anusuya Devi advised her to observe the fast of Ekadashi on Malmas during Shukla Paksha to be gifted with this most desired fruit.

Devi Anusuya also narrated her the rituals of the fast. After this, the queen observed Padmini Ekadashi fast with all the rituals, performed worship and listened to the Vrat Katha. On completion of the fast, Lord Vishnu appeared before the queen and asked for what she wished. Then, the queen said that if Lord Vishnu was happy with her worship then, her husband should be blessed in lieu of her.

Then, Lord Vishnu asked the king what he desired. The king said that he wanted to be blessed with a son, who should be multi-talented, respected in all three dimensions, and nobody could defeat him except Lord Vishnu. After this, Lord Vishnu said,  “Tatha Astu!”

After some time, the queen gave birth to a son who was known by the name of Kartavirya Arjuna. With the passage of time, this mighty king made Ravana captive. It is believed that Lord Krishna narrated the legend of Padmini Ekadashi or Purushottam Ekadashi to Arjuna and threw a light about the Mahatma pertaining to the legend.
