Onam’s 10th day is known as Thiruvonam and it has the biggest importance. Shravan Nakshatra (constellation) is known as Thiruvonam in Malayalam. According to the Malayalam calendar, when Shravan Nakshatra falls in Chingam month, on that day Thiruvonam is celebrated.

On 29th August 2023, Tuesday, the celebration of Onam begins. Thiruvonam Nakshatra begins at 02:43 A.M. and ends at 11:50 P.M. on the same day.
Meaning Of Onam
The word ‘Thiruvonam’ is made from 2 words ‘Thiru’ and ‘Onam’. The word ‘Thiru’ means “the one that is pure”. It is believed that King Mahabali comes from heaven to earth to meet his subjects on the day of ‘Onam’. Onam is also connected with the ‘Vamana’ incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

10-Day Celebrations Of Onam Festival
Onam 2023 is celebrated for 10 days. Let us know in brief about how each day is celebrated during this 10-day festival.
First Day: It is called Athan and the people visit a nearby temple after taking a bath. Boiled Bananas and Papad are eaten for breakfast in Athan. After that, a Carpet is made from flowers named ‘Pookalam’. This Day King Mahabali prepares to descend from heaven to earth to meet his subjects.
Second Day: This day is called ‘Chithira’ and this day also begins with the worshiping of God. After worshiping, the ladies decorate the ‘Pookalam’ with new flowers.
Third Day: This day is called ‘Chodhi’ and on this day the shops start getting decorated for the shopping of Thiruvonam.
Fourth Day: The fourth day of Onam is called ‘Vishakam’. A Pookalam competition is organized on this day. Everyone participates in this competition along with their Pookalams. The ladies also prepare Chips and pickles for Thiruvonam.

Fifth Day: It is known as Anijham. This day is the most beautiful because a Snake Boat Race is organized on this day. This spectacle is very beautiful.
Sixth Day: This is known as ‘Thriketa’. Many types of cultural programs are organized on this day and festival holidays begin from this day.
Seventh Day: this day is called ‘Moolam’. Special Pujas are organized in Moolam temples. The Bazaars get decorated on Moolam and ladies buy things to decorate their houses.
Eighth Day: This day is known as ‘Pooradam’. On this day, people prepare idols made from clay and gracefully address them by saying“ Maa”. They also make clay idols of Lord Vishnu and King Mahabali. Then people offer different flowers to these idols.
Ninth Day: This day is called ‘Uthradom’. On this day King Mahabali enters Kerala. It is also called ‘First Onam’. On this day, people impatiently wait for King Mahabali and women prepare a big Pookalam.
Tenth Day: It is called ‘Thiruvonam’. This day King Mahabali comes to his kingdom from heaven to bless his subjects. This day is celebrated with full joy and devotion. To welcome the king, women make big Rangolis at the entrance of their houses and prepare Sadhya Food. This day is also famous by the name of ‘Second Onam’ and a large number of firecrackers are burnt and the whole region is illuminated with lights.
The festival of Onam continues for two more days after Thiruvonam and due to this, the festival of Onam lasts for 12 days. However, the major importance is of 10 days only.
Eleventh Day: It is called ‘Avittam’ and also known as the third Onam. On the eleventh day, the people are busy giving a grand return to Mahabali to the heavens.
Twelfth Day: It is called ‘Chathay’ and along with this the festival of Onam concludes.

- Thiruvonam is one of the major and important festivals of Kerala. The people of Kerala celebrate this festival with great joy and happiness. The celebration of this festival starts 10 days before Thiruvonam.
- The eighth day of Onam 2023 is called ‘Pooradam’ and all the essential items to celebrate Thiruvonam are purchased on this day.
- The ninth day is called ‘Uthrodam’ and fresh fruits and vegetables are purchased on this day. All the vegetables are cut in the evening of the ninth day and all the necessary preparations are completed to celebrate the festival of Thiruvonam.
- On the tenth day, people wake up early, take baths and wear new clothes and make donations to poor people. In many homes, the women give clothes as gifts to everyone.
- Thiruvonam Puja and all the rituals related to this festival must be held in Shravana Nakshatra (constellation) only.
- On the day of Thiruvonam, the home must be decorated after cleaning. It holds special importance to clean the main entrance of the home and decorate it to welcome King Mahabali.

The Mythological Story Behind Onam
According to the mythological story, there was a king named ‘Bali’ in Treta Yug. He was a big devotee of Lord Vishnu. King Bali always speaks the truth, makes donations, and gives respect to Brahmins. He also used to perform Yagnas. Due to his devotion, the powers of King Bali increased enormously due to which deity Indra became jealous of him. King Bali also occupied Indralok.
Due to the fear of King Bali, Lord Indra, and other deities came to the shelter of Lord Vishnu and asked for help. Then Lord Vishnu incarnated as ‘Vamana’ to protect the deities. He appeared as a Brahmin Boy in front of Bali. By then, King Bali was able to establish his supremacy in the universe.

King Mahabali was a religious person and he had an attribute that he never let any Brahmin leave his house without donating anything to them. So, he asked the Vamana incarnation of Lord Vishnu to ask for something. Then Lord Vishnu asked King Bali to donate a piece of land equal to his three steps. The Guru or teacher of King Bali, Shukracharya was present there and recognised Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana and about his intention. He warned King Mahabali that the Vamana is none other than Lord Vishnu himself and he has come to avenge all his wealth and property.
King Mahabali said to Vamana to ask about his wish. King Bali vowed to fulfill his wish. Then the Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu took a gigantic form and measured the whole earth in his first footstep, and he measured the whole sky, heaven, and Brahmalok in his second footstep. Now nothing was left in the universe. So, Vamana asked King Mahabali where he should put his third footstep. As nothing was left with King Mahabali, he offered his head and Lord Vishnu placed his third step over Bali’s head and King Bali went to Patal Lok.
