References About This Ekadashi in Mahabharata
We can also find references being made about this fast during the era of Mahabharata. According to the legend, Pandav Putra Bhima, like his other brothers and wife Draupadi, couldn’t observe a fast on the date of Ekadashi. It was difficult for him to do this since he had a big body and a large appetite. Bhima felt that he was disrespecting Lord Vishnu by not fasting on this date. Bhima went to Maharishi Ved Vyas in a hope to find a solution to his problem. Maharishi Vyas emphasized the importance of Nirjala Ekadashi fast and advised him to do it. Since then, Nirjala Ekadashi also came to be known as Bhimseni Ekadashi.
