Once on arrival of King Daksha Prajapati, all the people who were present over there stood up in his honour, but Lord Shankar did move from his place. King Daksha did not like this gesture by Lord Shiva, the husband of his daughter Sati, and considered it as his insult. After some time, Daksha performed a Yagya at his residence, in which he invited all the gods and goddesses, but to avenge his insult, the king did not invite Lord Shiva.

Sati expressed her wish to attend the Yagya performed by her father. On her request, Lord Shankar allowed her to attend the Yagya. When she reached there, she was only greeted by her mother. The talks of her sisters were full of taunts and sarcasm. Daksha, the father of Sati, used filthy and harsh words for Lord Shiva in the presence of everyone.
When Sati heard the harsh and insulting words used by her father for Lord Shiva, she could not bear the insult at all and sacrificed her life by jumping into the Yagya Vedi. Sati was reborn as the daughter of Himalaya, the king of mountains, and was named as Shailputri. Parvati and Hemavati are the other names of Maa Shailputri and she was also married to Lord Shiva.
